Carpet or Wood

A rather unusual subject for OT, but I had a recent disagreement on this matter and wondered what the general consensus is.

My floor is wood. Actually, I think it is some kind of fake solution, but it cleans really well which is why I prefer it. My favourite house has oak blocks laid down for flooring.

The disagreement was with someone who thinks wood flooring gets dirty easier, so they prefer carpet which they also claim is warmer.

Wood is a classic insulator, certainly better than concrete. Think about heat-retaining wood cabins or wooden-handles on cooking pans. Wood also burns less easily than carpet, making it safer. On wood floors, a thick fluffy rug gives a nice place to cuddle without dirt getting trapped under the sofa.

So which do you prefer?

Thanks Perf.

Looks like it's about kitchen flooring. For the recond, I was considering reception rooms when I started this thread.

And you don't get splinters in your buttocks / kneecaps from having sex on the carpet :D. Oh but then you do get carpet burns on carpet :hmm:. Errr, take your pick!
If you get a quality wood floor, you won't get splinters from such activities (unless you're superman, like me).

My kitchen has tiles. Tiles are good but stone would be an alternative. Unfortunately, cups don't bounce on either of these materials

Offices differ greatly from one another, in purpose and usage. I do not have an office at the moment, but assuming things were different, I would trust an interior decorator to choose - impressions count for a lot, especially when you rely on presentations to win contracts. The company contracting me at the moment has a horrible tatty carpet, but I do not spend much time there anyway :)

Quality wood floor in every room then please :D.

then removed by a mod for being border-line
Well the prefabricated wood floor I have here is smooth and coated, so no risk of splinters. And the oak blocks I mentioned in my favourite house have had 50 years of wax polishing so no problems there either. I suppose you could bump your head, but what did you think thick fluffy rugs were intended for?

The main reason not to have wall-to-wall carpeting is for the sake of the people who will inherit the place.

I had to tear up miles of that stuff when I bought my summer house...goddamn is it a pain!

I much prefer wood floors than carpet. The kitchen and some of the halls in my house are brick, I like this even more than wood.

Hard floors hurt my feet.

And cat hair and dust becomes tumbleweeds in the corners and underneath furniture.

I'll take good-quality carpet any day.

Better then being stuck in your carpet.

Wood, but with a nice Persian rug thrown down here and there.
I hear the ones made in China can actually be better quality. It's one of those things worth reading into before buying.

That is a big summer house. I envy you :)

Yes. I mean the mortgage might say my parents, but you know. Would they do anything without my approval first? I doubt it. And, if they did, they wouldn't have the nerve to make me help out fixing up the place.
