cats not dealing collateral damage?

Whenever my cats attack a city to reduce its defense, it doesn't deal collateral damage to the units on the same tile. It reduces the defensive bonus, but no collateral damage at all, ever. The AI can deal collateral damage to me though.

What's the problem?

Thanks,

Jimmi

The cats have 2 modes of attack: bombard ( the bullseye icon ) , that reduces the defensive bonus, and the ordinary attack ( move the cat against the city, just like any other unit). When bombarding, the cat doesn't make colateral damage. Colateral damage only happens when you attack with the cat ( moving it to the city square)

Cats (and seige generally) have two seperate functions: removing defences and attacking units. You can't do both at the same time (tho you could use half your cats to remove defences and the other half to attack units (when they do get collateral damage)).

Also remember that cats won't do collateral damage to other siege units as well :)

Awesome, thanks guys... Just got started playing the game. I got it about a year back, but never got into it. A couple days ago I booted it up again, and now I can't stop playing :D .

Welcom to the forums :) , I haven't managed to stop playing in a while too.
Also with exp you can upgrade your catapults to do more collateral damage, this is usually more useful then the +10% star or city raider promotion.

Something else to have in mind. The siege weapons attacking units in the city (hopefully after culture defense was brought down to zero) won´t do collateral damage
to units with less than 50% health. This is also true for planes and bombers.

They don't? I've gotten defenders down to pretty low levels if i can recall ... I'm gonna try more collateral damage upgrades this time as i usually go with city raider 2 cats.

I find CR promotions better in almost every case.

You can get lower than 50% against the unit you attack, but not the collateral receivers, which are limited to 5 (?) for each attack.

So if an archer is at 1.5 as a collateral target, attacking w/ further cats won't weaken it further via collateral damage? I've never really looked it up ... is this true just for cats, or for all siege weapons?

Doh, nevermind & thanks for the info - learned something new today! ... i found the thread here: Combat Explained

Yes, always take the +collateral damage promotion. If the cat lives to get another promo, you can follow it with more bombard damage (best when you are down to just a few units) or even more collateral damage (good when you still have lots of units that you don't mind sending on suicide missions.)

Well, according to this thread:

Gone are the Civ3 days of completely red-lining a unit. Each unit that can do collateral damage has a limit on the amount of damage it can do. These are given in the Units XML file. For catapults, it is 50; cannons 60; artillery 70. Tanks/panzers and modern armor are capped at 60; Cho-Ko-Nu at 60, and (stealth) bombers at 50. That means a catapult can not damage a unit at or below 50 hps. Similarly, an artillery cannot damage any unit at or below 30 hps. Those are hard caps.

I generally find the AI oftentimes has one outstandingly tough defender with City Defence II or III that really needs to be softened up with a suicide attack whilst the other defenders have fewer defensive promotions. My non-siege City Raiders can achieve good odds attacks on the weaker defenders without collateral damage I just need to get past the top defender.

In this case I prefer to use a City Raider promoted cat for the initial assault as I value even one hit on the top defender more than increased collateral damage to the weaker defenders.

OTOH if there are two or more outstanding defenders or the city is on a hill and/or I'm going to send in a multiple suicide cats then I prefer the collateral damage promotions.
