I was looking for a game today (Star Wars Battlefront II :)) and there were two versions... the CD-ROM and the DVD-ROM. What's the difference?

Probaly nothing much. Gameplay wise I highly highly doubt theres a difference. But the DVD one probaly has a bit more extras and stuff. Or the CD version might come with two instalation discs while the dvd version only needs one.

Well, if you get the DVD version, then yes, you need a dvd drive to read the disc. If you get the CD version, and there are no DVDs that come with it, then no, you don't need a dvd drive.

Usually no difference in the actual game. A lot of times you'll see the "standard" edition game on CD, and a "special/collectors" edition on DVD that has "behind the scenes" and "making of" type stuff - and costs more of course.

We're quickly moving to the point though that most games will be on DVD because of size. I won't mind that... it's darned annoying installing a game that comes on 6 CDs, or more.

Are there still people with gaming quality machines that don't have DVD ROM. It's not like they are expensive. Multiple disks are quite annoying during installation. With just the one, you can just start it and let it run without interference.

For some reason, DVD drives haven't caught on as well over here in the US as they have in Europe. At least, that's what game publishers give as a reason why they still do CDs here, while they do DVDs everywhere else. :hmm:

Personally, I would assume that "serious" gamers (is that an oxymoron?) have DVD-ROM drives on their top-end systems.

Wouldn't it be better for publishers to release their games in DVD than in many CDs because 6 CDs surely costs more than one DVD?
And if no publisher releases their games in DVD it's unlikely that people start buying DVD drives as long as there CD versions available.

Well I know DELL includes a dvd drive on their most basic model so I would assume that they have caught on.

Just bought a $600 computer myself, and I have just one drive on there, a DVD burner. So I'm happy.

Seems here in the last six months or so DVD drives/burners have gotten really cheap, and I'm starting to see them on the lower end systems.

I really doubt it. When I built my previous comp even in 2002 I got a DVD-ROM for $35 or so, and now they go for under $20. Practically any prebuilt comp purchased in the last 3-4 years will have a DVD drive.

Well DVDs cost more than CDs. Probably not that much more, but to get the good quality DVDs with protection from scratches and the like better than cheap "Great Quality" crappy ones, yea.
