CFL turns down bid D'Angelo bid for Ottawa franchise

The Globe and Mail reports that the Canadian Football League has notified food and beverage entrepreneur Frank D'Angelo that it does not wish to negotiate with his group for a possible expansion franchise in Ottawa.

"We had a meeting a couple of weeks ago, and for whatever reason this is what they've chosen," said D'Angelo told the Globe.

"We're saddened, because we put a lot of money and time into it, but what am I going to do? I'm helpless. I think we were the right people."

D'Angelo's group was one of three that had expressed interest in relaunching a team in Ottawa.

Another bid, by Golden Gate Capital of Toronto, was withdrawn last month when one of its primary backers was stricken with cancer. The remaining bid comes from a group of U.S.-based investors and is led by former CFL player Bill Palmer.

The CFL had been seeking a $3.5 million franchise fee for a new team in Ottawa.

In April. the league's board of governors decided during a meeting in Toronto to suspend the Renegades' operation for the 2006 season. The CFL spent two weeks desperately searching for a new owner for the franchise after minority owner Bill Smith indicated he no longer wanted to put money into the club and majority owner Bernie Glieberman wasn't willing to be accountable for more than $2.5 million in losses. The Renegades reportedly lost about $4 million last year and was projected to lose between $5 and $6 million in 2006.

Ricky Williams considering return to CFL?

It's not a given that Ricky Williams will go back to the NFL next season. According to the former Miami Dolphins running back, a return to the CFL in 2007 isn't out of the question.

"If I came back here, you can put me anywhere," he tells USA Today. "Up here, I can play offense, defense, special teams. I can do everything. I can block, play tight end, running back, receiver - even play the line.

"The NFL is so structured - 'You do this.' Here I can do so much."

Williams, who's first season with the Toronto Argonauts has been marred by injury, is under contract to the Dolphins through 2008 and says he would need their approval to return to the CFL for a second season.

"I'll have to talk with my family and (Dolphins) Coach (Nick) Saban to really see what the best decision is for me.

"Honestly, this season probably has been the most fun I've had playing since I've been in pro football."

Saban says he hasn't considered Williams' future with the Dolphins beyond this season.

"I support the players I'm coaching and I'll continue to support Ricky," Saban tells the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. "I will address (Ricky's situation) at the (proper) time."

Williams is currently serving a one-year suspension from the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy for a fourth time. He would have to apply for reinstatement before returning to the Dolphins.
