Changing a captured city's name: negative impact(s)?

Here's the situation: playing as Bismarck, I had a war against the French. In the course of events, I captured Lyons. As a function of that capture, I changed the name to Löwenhof (totally made-up name but it vaguely resembles Lyons and looks German). The cultural advisor popped up in the upper right (as is the wont of the various advisors) with a questioning facial expression.

That made me wonder if there would be any sort of a negative impact on making a name change like that; e.g., whether it would be seen by the AI as a negative sort of Kulturkampf. Anyone have any direct experience with this? Thanks.

Not to fear... changing the city name does nothing to happiness or culture, it is merely an entry in a text file that fills in the appropriate graphic blocks. No connection to culture or happiness calculations at all.

On a seperate note, I too am unhappy about the lack of German city names that the game offers up. Seems like you get to "New Berlin" before you are even prompted to build the forbidden palace. I usually leave google maps open with Germany front and center. If I ever run out of names, a glance at the map yields dozens of good names for cities. I borrow satellite countries for ideas, too... Switzerland, Austria, et al. Viel glück mein Freund!

Whereas I often have Artyville, Cavtown, Infburg, Ironville, Spicerack, Eliteton, etc. In the later phases of the game, it's handy knowing where I can lay my hands on something specific amid all the clutter.

Recently, I resuscitated one of my early games, which had culture flipping enabled (normally I turn that off). One town was giving me so many problems I renamed it Pain-in-the-Butt

I've noticed that also, and like yourself, I've used Zurich, Vienna, and a few others--even in one instance going so far as to use Windhoek from what was once German South-West Africa. Danke sehr!

That's a riot! Now what's needed is something akin to translations for other cultures, e.g., Mal-sur-Cul for the French, Tuchisweh for the Germans, and so forth.

Sometimes I'll do something similar...

Once in awhile, if I have nothing better to do, I'll found a town on a one-tile or tundra island and name it "Jerkville" or "Stinktown", gift it to a civ I'm about to destroy, and wipe out all their other cities. They're left to sit out the balance of the game in Dumpsburg, utterly humiliated.

I'm usually content to use the standard names. But like Snarkhunter, I'll sometimes name cities something specific, just so I can find them more easily: Sweatshop, for example, might be where I park my slaves until pollution control is needed. Lonescienceville might be where I have the one lone scientist that I'm using for research if I'm amassing gold.

Most of the time, I use the standard names. However I rename my cities when I have a limited number of them i.e. 5CC. Or when certain town/cities has a special significance i.e. one-tile naval base island might be Seaport.

There's no negative impact for renaming cities to the game. But as for myself, I usually run out of ideas before I run out of city spots :crazyeye:

Now that's just sadistic. I love it

I'm mildly surprised you didn't name it Utterly Humiliated, instead :D
