Not all optionals are bad, though. If you research Republic first, you can pretty much trade it for everything in the Ancient Age and some Medieval Age techs. Besides trade value, you need one optional(Republic) or the other(Monarchy) to get out of Despotism.

Well, you can opt for feudalism... (not that I recommend it)
 
Or you can wait for the AI to research Republic or Monarchy. Personally, if I miss the republic slingshot and am going for a military VC, I am quite happy to use Feudalism. Increased productivity (via the whip) is a fair alternative to no war weariness, when comparing Feudalism and Monarchy.
 
IIRC, Feudalism has similar WW characteristics of Republic or even Democracy. Monarchy, Communism, and Fascist are the only ones without WW. The advantage of Feudalism with many towns is phenomenal unit support. In C-Bob 03, we have over 1000 units we could concievably support for free, and we haven't even came close to making that many. Wars can go very fast with 10 cavalry armies and 50 artillery units, you can win one before WW get out of hand.
