I love the Charlemagne mod. Its great to have a proper, expanded stint of medieval warfare when in the game the period flits by while you're busy building banks / universities what-have-you.

As a passing thought (since some of the more important wars of settlement were fought in this period) I wonder if the designers of Civ 5(!) would think of laying a greater emphasis on this era?

Anyway, back to the point. Brilliant scenario, but soooooo frustratingly easy. On Emperor, I had only to build some cities, defend them, and gift a few hundred gold to the Pope and - Bam - I'd won!

I'd built a mouth-wateringly huge army with my military production city (1 unit per turn with 15 ex-p.) and was just looking forward to getting properly stuck in with the broadsword, mace and pike when...*Phhht* :hmm:

All very irritating. I know I could have played on but... well... we all remember building vast empires up to 5000ad in Civ2 but without the thrill of competition, after a while, it just all feels a bit empty.

It truely is on the easy side. I played through once as aquataine on noble difficulty and won with out too much trouble. Not a great victory so I deceided to try again and see how I could improve my game. Well more of how to most effectivily spend my advance start cash. Any who spent a couple of time seeing what kind of cities I could get up and running. I then tried one game pruchasing only 1 city, worker, and then 3 catapults and 2 archers. This was on noble/marathon iirc. After the 10 turns of peace I went out with my army and began attacking my rivals and capturing their capitals one by one. I just happened to go in a circle around my city and conquered all the other civs in the race for the popes attention. Well after 16 minutes of play I was surprised to have won a conquest victory to say the least, I don't even think my capital had finished building its granary. That was way too easy even on noble

I guess I enjoy the fact that I'm not that good, I'm finding it not as easy as you do. Clearly to Tommy's point, if you just sit back and give gold and techs to the Papal States you win an automatic victory. But it is a good, fun, scenario, so I would recommend you just play it and don't do that!

Best wishes,

I didn't know gifting money to the Pope gave favor!

I could have won that game so much more easily...I ended up trading with the Pope often, but rather fought against the Byzantines, who always picked a fight with me, and I conquered most of the map and built temples/monasteries for favor points.

You are better fr doing this, the gifting to the Pope is clearly an exploit if done in excess.

I beat it easily, I gifted a lot of money, and just declared on Saladin.

Would have to agree its too easy. I have played a few times as Charlemagne and just as the going gets good i.e large war army built up some good solid cities etc I win on Papal favour and thats on monarchy and higher levels never tried deity though. Never gifted gold just spread religion and built christian temples etc. I even tried playing just conquering and not spreading religion and just through religious spread papal favour gets high. Great scenario though would be cool to see some mods of it.

when i was playing as the one who starts with paris, Charlemagne got insane amount pope favor in the begining and crushed me with 15 papal units.. :D

BTW, i'm working on this scenario and added new bigger map. its part of TAM map, so all credits goes to them.. ;)

i'll show a screenie..

but i broke advanched start, when i placed Rome, Constantinople and Jerusalem and if i dont place them i cant place holy cities of religions.. :(
