Chop before placing?

is it required to chop forests down a turn or two before you place a district in order to get a benefit? Or can you let the system automatically do it when you place the district.

If you place a district without chopping first, you will not get a benefit from the forest or jungle like you would if you chopped it first.

In the case of forest, be sure to finish the rest of the calculation for actual hammers saved:

Subtract this charge's share of the hammer costs of the builder being used (which depends upon the civics that were in effect along with how many you'd built)

But it basically amounts to it's generally better to chop before placing if you have a builder nearby. If it would take several turns to get a builder in production and you want the district now is the main time to skip the chop and just place the district directly on the forest.

related question that's been haunting me and comes up so frequently: If you plan on building a district on a tile that has a forest or jungle, is it possible to use the hammers from chopping on that tile towards the district. Here's the situation that frequently comes up:

-you finish a production in a city and have a worker on the tile in question. If you select the district in the production que, it will remove the forest and the hammer bonus is lost. But, if you chop the forest or jungle BEFORE selecting the district in the production que, will the hammers count towards the district, or will they be lost?

I run into this situation so often and just assume that the hammers will be lost, and consequently build another "placeholder" item in the production que just to avoid losing the hammers (often another worker)

Yes, I've done this and it does add the hammers to the district.
