Choppy Video/sound... what to do?

Okay, I am using WIndows ME, and a 1.4 Ghz computer. I just upgraded to a Raedon 9600 card and now have 700+ mB or Ram. It takes forever to load at the "init engin" screen and then doesn't play the intro very good, just bits and peices of and goes through the sequence. In the game, I can play but it takes like a second for the screen to jump to the next location if I put my mouse all the way to one side or the other. The sound and everything is good, everything just seems delayed. Nothing crashes which is a good point. I purposley made it to a wonder to see if it was liek many other posting on here and it was... no sound and I think it was choppy too. I really don't think it is my operating system or porcessor speed. I have tried changing performances on card and changing the CIV init file. I can play the game and the sound is pretty good, but it is terribly slow. I doubt this is what they had planned. ANyone got some suggestions.

Win ME is not supported by CIV IV.

So the fact that you have it running is pretty good.

Please post a dxdiag file maybe something to help it along.

What is make and model of your computer too?

Part of your problem is your operating system. Civ4 is only compatable with xp or 2000. You're lucky it runs at all, however many people (even with higher end systems) have choppy wonder movies. Supposedly there will be a low res set of wonder movies released soon. In the meantime, you can download RAD game tools bink player here:
http://www.radgametools.com/
This will allow you to view them outside the game (they always run smoothly on this, even with civ 4 running).

You have the same graphics car as I do. DO you have any problems? I ran Direct X and it passed all the test.

It's probably causing your sluggish gameplay, but I have choppy video with xp home. Also, have you installed latest patch (1.52)? It corrects the memory problems which contribute to laggy play.

Your SB LIVE! is so old it could mess everything up.

Problem with that is sound emulation support can be had for XP with no effort.

For ME not so easy.

Try turning your sound accelaration in dxdiag off.

It that does not help you could try and emulate NT based OS thru compat. settings.

My ME is rusty and not sure if it will let you do that or not but you could give it a go.

Go to civ IV main folder and right click on CIVIV.exe file.

Go to compatibility tab and use 2000. IF 2000 is not there then try NT.

Make sure the sound is still set all the way to left in dxdiag like before tho.

IF that doesnt work, leave the combat setting at NT or 2000 and download this program.

download and install

Then from the CIV IV shortcut(not the main exe but the one on your desktop) right click on it and select run with VDMsound.

After that I am fresh out of ideas.

PS

When testing this stuf make sure you ctrl/alt/delete

End all background programs running

Leave explorer and sys tray.

Everything else end program.

I am guessing under ME there is no compatibility tab... I remember something about DOS using all that stuff I will look into it. FOr now I have went back to Creative and am going ot see if I can update driver. Sorry about my ME and sound card beinf the culprit.

There are some compat settings with ME. Not as extensive as XP and if it is possible it would have to be thru the main exe file of CIV IV

Yes, thanks for all of your help NEON. I am just going to go buy a new system. The one I have is about 5 years old so I am due for another one. I do beleive it has something to do with the sound card as you noticed. I also downloaded that program yo urecommended but it will not run under ME. So anyways, thanks for all of your help. It is nice to know someone can sort through all this Microsoft crap. By the way, in your opinion, did theu not do a good enough job preparing Civ 4 for release in terms of compatibility?

Marketing overuled glitches.

Ati glitch in the begining was way over the top.

Listing the min and recommended specs for ram as both 512 was marketing.

I think they did that one cause they looked around and saw most peops operating at 512mb rather than 1gig.

Due to the industry when you buy a game you should set your own requirements.

IE:

they say 512 of ram then X 2 it and have 1 gig.

they say 64 mb video ram x 2 to 128

they say 1.2 cpu x 2 to 2.4

This way when you get the game you wont be too upset that it is not way fast on your machine.

Anyways good luck in getting a new computer.

BTW IMHO Name brand computers suck at running new 3d games unless they go out of their way to tout that it is a gamming rig.

Think out the box a little when buying a computer.

Dont go for the DELL $499 special.)

In game videos don't work on my system. Leader video is either black or red, wonder video a still color patchwork. Same with victory video. Into is fine.

SYSTEM: WinXP SP2 on a 2.2GHz AMD CPU, 1024 MB RAM, 9600 RADEON, latest drivers.

I already tried several ini changes, without success. Is there an alternative to switching the videos off?
