Chronicles IX: Reign of the Philosopher Kings

All this time, and the only person you fought is some barbarians. Now you must face the possibility of real warfare. It doesn't help that Mongolia is right next to you! Something's going to happen eventually.

Due to morality issues, are you allowed to build nukes? or an offensive force for that matter?

Nukes, never. Offensive war, though, can sometimes be justified.

In Part VI, I conquered the world as the PK's. They were doing out of a deep moral obligation to unify humanity. ;)

Ok, I kinda cheated on that one. When I planned these out right after finishing VIII, I lined up the screenshots for this character's story and I apparently made a mistake. He would've been unspeakably old by 1792, so I tried to explain away the gap with some dialogue about it taking time to ratify the treaties, etc.

I don't imagine anybody actually cares about my continuity errors, but I thought I'd explain just the same.

I sure as heck don't care about continuity errors, as long as you don't go back in time!
Great Story!!

Well, I would've done more tonight but once my wife and I finished watching Derailed, I continued my first Monarch game.

At first I was thinking, "geez, Monarch's not too hard...all I had to do was play a little more aggressively and not be such a wonder-hog and I'm doing great."

Then Isabella, Catherine and Elizabeth all declare war on me! I'm fending off these three at once. Amazingly, though, I haven't had to deal with any real SOD's. I blew a huge stack of catapaults making sure that Catherine's initial wave of Cossacks was no threat, but those tenacious suckers keep hovering in one forest tile protecting a catapault that is slowing chipping away at the defenses of a city I culture bombed years ago. Even at nearly half strength, those Cossacks are too tough for my cavalry to deal with. So far I've lost no ground, but DAMN.

Just that, DAMN!

Anyway, I'll move into the next character tomorrow. IX's almost done, believe it or not.

Ok, sorry, no story today. I spent all my down time playing out that monarch game. I was tempted to go for Conquest, but sadly the computer I was using just wasn't up to it--once the whole map is revealed it starts grinding very, very slowly. But with some patience I snagged a Space-Ship victory. It was a good game, but I've got to say, all things considered the jump from Prince to Monarch is about 400% easier than the Noble to Prince jump was.

Sorry to say that I've got to go back to work tomorrow, so work on these stories is likely to slow down a bit. But I'll try to make the most of the upcoming weekend--though I also have lots of plans so I can't make any promises.

What I find that it helps if you play on a smaller map. (I play at standard size. Huge is too big for my computer)

Yeah, but it's against my religion to play on anything less than max. players and max size.

What I would do is make sure I didn't accept anybody's world map in trade (once I kinda knew where everything was anyway) because each time would take about 3 or 4 minutes.

It doesn't matter, though, as I turned in that laptop today so fate has intervened to rob me of my ability to play Civ. It's actually kind of a blessing. I get nothing done when I'm on a Civ binge.

So now, back to the story...

Can't wait for the ending man, was just wondering if you ever went to war during this whole game or not?

Pity. You don't know what you're missing. (Fast loading times!)

So far the story is progressing well. It's obvious you are going for a space victory, after your attempts at world peace came apart. Giorge Cycnusides is rather interesting. Is he a renamed Great Person, or just someone that came out of thin air, like almost everyone else?

One final question: What does "NE" stand for? (1880 NE)

Anyway, keep up the great work!

If I remember correctly, the only person he has went to war with s the Barbarians. Unless, of course, there is something he's not telling us.

Giorge wasn't a GP, no. None of the main characters are, though some of them have met GP's. And many of the names aren't exactly out of "thin air." Let's just say the suffix "ides" means "son of" and can indicate a family line.

NE = National Era. The BC/AD transition coincided nicely with my annexation of the Thracian city, which I renamed Atticus. So in the game, I made that the official beginning of the Nation...and also the point from which I started paying attention to the actual calendar years.

And as to the lack of violence in Part IX...well...hmmm...yeah, I'm just not going to say anything about that.

;)

The plot thickens! (Dum dum dum!) How did you become so wealthy? Every screneshot shows you running in the red! Anyway, I can't wait for part X!

I think I might have had one great merchant, but if I did I din't screenshot him and I can't remember for sure.

I trade with the AI a lot, trying to get whatever liquid assets I can. But I think most of what let me run at 100% science in this stage of the game was just left-over cash from a stunt I pulled to get the Three Gorges Dam. I didn't realize it until it was way too late, but I had only put one city ON a river, and it wasn't very productive at all. So I switched to Universal Suffrage and set the science to 0% to rush the Dam. I guess I ended up with a nice little nest egg after that.

It's weird, though, because in the screenshot when I finsih the Dam, I'm at 100% and running a small profit. I think I got some good trade deals for my cultural exports--I had musicals, movies and singles.

By the way, ToV, I love the Swift quote in your sig.

Hey Hemling, Is it true you need to be at a certain lattitude to build the space elevator? I recently couldn't build it in my southern, more productive cities (capital and another two). Instead forced to build in an economy city(but what is US for?)

You've got to be within thirty degrees of the equator to build the Space Elevator (technically, you could only build one along the equator itself, but the game gives you a generous reprieve there).
