Why do you care?
Calling all demogame lawyers!

The Bar Association is an organization dedicated to the study of the law of this demogame and to the development of a firm, well-described body of case law centered on precedent from this demogame and previous demogames (where applicable). Should a Legal Committee of the assembly of citizens be created, the Bar Association will work with that Committee.

The Bar Association will advise the Judiciary in its cases, and invites the Judiciary to utilize the services of its members in assembling the facts and the law of a particular matter of legal concern.

This Mission Statement can be amended later. I have to write an essay...

Sir,

May I present my credentials, and ask that this Bar recognize them, that I might assist in the practice of law in this nation?

OK, because of the way things are looking, I think there will be three areas where the law is discussed:

The Office threads for the Judiciary
This thread
The Legal and Judiciary Committee thread (not yet created)

I envision this division of labor between the threads:

Office threads discuss current cases and potential cases. Hopefully, these threads will remain rather quiet.

This thread, the Bar Association, will discuss what the law is, i.e. interpreting the current body of law, spotting contradictions in the laws before they become court cases.

The Legal and Judiciary Committee will mostly discuss what the law should be, i.e. how best to organize and write laws, as well as what issues of justice.

If the Bar Association finds a contradiction, then it has two options:

  1. Hold a public discussion on how best to resolve it, then create an initiative, then poll it. Naturally, this might take longer (because it requires discussion and because it could be a bit boring) than
  2. Engineering a test case; that is, a member of the Bar Association volunteers to act in a way that would trigger the conflicting areas of law. It is then ruled on in the courts. This might be shorter, as it need not clog up everybody's time.

The Bar Association would also be able, with consensus, to file an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief to the Chief Justice in all cases about their opinion on the law in question, so long as the brief is impartial; if the brief is not impartial, the brief must have the unanimous consent of the Bar Association.

What do you think?

Honestly, I see many different law threads with the bar committee. I think it would be unwise and confusing to just have one thread to cover our group. Instead, I suggest we make a different thread for each potentional debate. For instance we have two separate discussions over statement x and y, I believe it would be best to have two different threads are they would be totally different discussions. Having them in the same thread would be confusing.

Another suggestion I have and this is for all committees, is to start the name of every thread that concerns that committee with the committees acronym. For instance, every legal discussion thread for this group could start with:

BAR: name of discussion

A military thread would be:

MIL: name of discussion

You could than link each thread to the main thread for that group. Realize these suggestions would only be for very active groups.

My 2 :gold:.

Hmm. Sounds a bit over-complicated, but I like the idea. I also like the filing of an amicus curiae. Hopefully, this citizen's group will not be trying to overtake the responsibilities of the Judiciary. That would eventually ruin a good idea. Please add my name to your list of participants.

If anything, we're helping the judiciary do its job. In any case, all but two candidates for the judiciary are also members of the Bar.

Also, do you forsee some of your members eventualy becoming Judicary members?

It's pretty likely. As of now, it's guaranteed that the Public Defender will be a Bar member; two of the three candidates for Judge Advocate (myself and George OP) are also members, and Ravensfire (running for Chief Justice) is also a bar member. That leaves donsig and Donovan Zoi.

EDIT: Currently, BA members are leading in the polls for the Judiciary.
