My ideas regarding to city defenses.
1. Basic Walls. Can be build without tech requirements.
2. City Walls. Needs Masonry
3. Castle/Citadel/Keep/Dungeon. Requires either Construction or Engineering. (AFAIK Actually there were 'Nothing New' about this 'Castles' since Romans built them first. Europeans only build taller ones.
4. Bastion. Available with a tech that requires Gunpowder (which unlocks Bombard Cannon, which SHOULD predates Musket wielding infantrymen like Pike&Shot or Musketeers). Also immune to pre-gunpowder siege equipments and VERY resillient to catapults and trebuchets (I don't really agree with the existence of Trebuchet. Actually I favor Gunpowder to be the LAST Medieval tech that unlocks Bombards (Which are hardcore castle wreckers, something vaunted Trebuchets aren't really easy to do. Not only Bastions (Star Forts actually but referred to as 'Bastion' if built to upgrade preexisting city walls) are tougher against bombards and cannons, but also more powerful and evenmore so against naval units. Depending on Gameplay. it may have increased range to castles.
Alternate name: Casemate.
5. Defense Battery: AKA "Fortress" in "War Machine" Scenario. Extendes city defensive firing range and LOS. Can represents either Palmerston Forts or Modern era Bunkers (The likes of Maginot and Siegfried Line in WW2 as well as Atlantic Wall with Big Naval Gun Battery.

This can still be built AFTER automatic defense granting techs is researched, also this thing can provide AA capability to a city
7. Sam Site. Can be built independently from other defenses. adds AA defenses exclusively.
