[GS] City Ranged Attack w/ Walls

Am I missing something with the ranged attack for cities? I had a domination game recently with Zulu and just finished a Gorgo game. Even late game my walls were doing like -10 damage to swordsman and -1 or -2 to any renaissance unit. I had steel researched and still I would get less than -10. I searched to see if anyone posted something similar but couldn’t find it. I swear some games my city ranged attack is not right. I don’t know if I am missing something or not.
 
A city’s ranged attack strength is equal to that of the civ’s strongest ranged unit strength across the empire.
 
Well that makes sense. I knew how melee worked with city defenses not sure why I didn’t put together the ranged attack the same way. Thanks for the response.

Do you need to have the unit be alive? Or once you built a crossbow for example, the city range strength upgrades and stays upgraded?
 
So if I make a field cannon or machine gun army all my cities will shoot like an army?
Yep, but they do not count promotions so will not double shoot without Victor.
I had field cannon armies last game, my cities were one shotting lots.
