I get some message about a 16 bit subsystem error. It used to work fine and I was very happy. (The DOS version never did work on xp.)

Now I can't even play the Windows version or CivNet. Is there a fix for this?

I am very unhappy, because Civ 1 is my favorite game - yes, I liked the windows version.

The exact message is in a box. At the top it says "16 bit windows subsystem."
Underneath that it says:
NTVDM has encountered a system error.
NTVDM has encountered a syspem error cOh Choose Close to terminate the application.

Can anyone figure this out?

NTVDM has encountered a system error.
NTVDM has encountered a syspem error cOh Choose Close to terminate the application.

With google I found the following:

Windows error code (hex C0)192 is defined in Winerror.h as
ERROR_EXE_MARKED_INVALID, "The operating system cannot run %1"

If so, then an EXE file image is damaged or invalid - maybe NTVDM
itself, or the 16-bit EXE you're trying to run within the NTVDM.

AND

To test the NTVDM subsystem
Click <Start/Run>.
In the Open box, type command.com, and then click OK.
If a Command Prompt window opens, your NTVDM subsystem works.
If a Command Prompt window doesn't open, there is a problem with the NTVDM subsystem.

Dack, I just tried that. A small black page came up, and below that was the same message I got before. Is this fixable?

Thanks for your help.

I was on the phone with Dell computer tech support for 45 minutes. It was finally decided that I would have to go into the registry to fix this problem. I am afraid to do that. It's the same story with CivNet. They think the files are corrupted.
