Alas I haven't played Civ2 since 2000 but last year I found a virtually mint boxed Civ 2 for a huge some of about 6 bucks US in a 2nd hand shop here. Had the tech chart map, manual etc and looked unread.

I'm scared to play it again as I suspect it hasn't aged to well. I'm currently playing Civ 3 conquests.

Anyway how many expansion packs were made for it? I've heard some of you guys talk about Test of Time.

I also bought Call to Power 2 but haven't really got the time/inclination to lay either of them.

There are a lot of different "versions" of Civ2:

-The original civ2 game
-The Conflict in Civilizations expansion (a expansion that added some scens) or CiC
-The Fantastic Worlds expansion (a expansion that added scens and more tools to do your own scens) or FW
-The Multiplayer Gold Edition (a expansion that allowed to play via Internet) or MGE

All these expansions are not saved-game compatible (the games saved with an expansion can't be loaded in another expansion) but are scenario compatible (upward, not downward: that's -> MGE can open any scen, FW can open any scen but MGE's scens, etc).

Plus you have Test of Time (ToT) the most recent expansion. This is not saved-gamed and not scen compatible with the previous versions.

Currently, MGE is by far the most popular expansion. There are unofficial patchs to convert any other version to the MGE one (check the download section of this site).

IMHO Civ2 has aged very well and still many scens are under development :)

And that means the spirit is still alive. I have tried Civ3 a few times, and I liked the enhanced diplomacy and the culture, but the rest kinda didn't catch up. Civ2 really IS worth the money. (But then I wonder who would actually sell their copy. Civ2 is close to the ultimate strategy game. If you implemented the culture and enhanced the AI a GREAT deal, it would be perfect.)
