civ 3 complete on windows 7 starter: program stopped working

Ok, so I installed just fine, I can play fine etc. But sometimes the game will just stop at specific moments and I will get a notice from windows that the program stopped working. The weird thing is, is that before it only did that when I played on a huge map, but now it also does it on large maps.

But I already have a save on large wich seems to still work fine. wth?!

I am playing a mod of mine, but the mod works fine. At least, it didnt crash on large. Didnt, because I wanted to change something about large maps, wich was that large maps are smaller and spawn civs closer. This didnt seem to work because after that, it started just randomly stop working. I reverted the change back, but it didnt seem to matter.

Now, the weird thing is, is that it does work, but it just stops at random moments. What is up with that?

Also, playing in xp compatibility is not an option because the ingame animations get very laggy, too laggy for my taste. I didnt implement all these new units to see only 5 frames of their entire attack animation.
 
ok, a quick update already... it seems like whenever I finish a barracks in my capital, it gives the error.

however, in that other save I had barracks in my capital so I checked if I could build barracks after I built a second city, and I seemed to be able to. Im not sure if it was just coincidence with the huge maps, but Im testing now.

anyone know what might cause something weird like this?

EDIT: I noticed it crashed when I tried to build barracks before I had a specific tech researched. This tech allows for civs to build 1.1.1 units, where as normally you only start with 0.1.1 default units. After this tech, it wont crash anymore. Anyone know what might be the cause of this?
