Civ 3 problem

Hello All.

I have been playing civ3 for a long time know and rarely do I have any problems. But in the past couple of days, the game simply wont play. I have reinstalled the packaged version and I can play that, but after downloading the patch named civ3v129f the game wont load. The screen will flash a couple of times and I end up right back at my desktop. For the past 2 years I have played with the patch and have had no problems. Why know? I have not installed any new programs that would interfere with civ, I am running xp with intel4ht processor and 512 ram. Any help would be appreciated as I love this game. Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is an easy fix, I did look around for an hour for any previous solutions.

I too am having a problem trying to start up Civ 3 conquests, it worked fine for me when i played it last year, though I can't get it to start now. All it does is blink the black screen that appears before loading and then sends me back to desktop. I haven't installed anything that should interefere with civ i think... if anyone has a solution, it'd be appreciated

To the posters who crash when game loads: Does Windows give you any kind of error message? Like a dialog box that says "Fatal Exception at a28f3h17"? Or any kind of error at all? It could be a problem with DirectX -- maybe try reloading that or an older version of it even.

If you don't patch it will the game work?

Yes it will. But then I must play with all the original errors that are with the game. Obviously the patches make for a more interesting and fun experience. Thank you for your reply and any assistance would be appreciated.
