My wife got a new laptop and likes to play civ3 on it. Only problem is that its a Vista laptop and thus has a few problems.

First thing is that it doesnt display any FMV, the intro doesnt come on but we can click past that into the game menu, thats fine, the real problem is with finishing the game, she won one last night via space race, and it crashes as soon as it tries to play the video ending.

I think it may be a problem with the resolution im playing at, is there any way to change it, perhaps by editing the shortcut?

You can force the resolution to be the same as what you entered the game at (probably something widescreen). To do this, open notepad and create a file with the following as its contents:

[Conquests]
KeepRes=1

Save this file under C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Conquests\ (or wherever Civ is installed) as conquests.ini. Not that you will have to disable Vista's User Account Control (UAC) in order to do this. You can turn this off through the Control Panel, and then the Security Center.

Not sure this'll help with the video, though. I've been having my share of Vista/Civ3 problems as well, preventing me from getting anywhere close to the victory videos. :(

Have the same problem but I use Civ3 on Steam. Any idea? Because the .ini file does not even exist:sad:

You can turn this off through the Control Panel, and then the Security Center.

This is what I need to do but when I go to Control Panel, Security Center, under other security settings it shows User Account Control as On and there doesn't seem to be anyway to change that. So if you know how I can disable this so I can update my game please tell me. Thanks!
