Civ 3 Tournament Proposal

Large maps? Part of the reason I signed up was because there were no large maps. Those take an awful lot of time. I don't want to give up having to play the GOTM because of the tournament or visa-versa!

Let's keep the large maps out of this, please!

Due to Donsig's complaint about large maps and other people's insistance on large maps, I suggest we make a poll to determine whether to have Large maps or not.

Another solution to the large map problem would be to only take the 3 best of the player's finishes out of the 4 games. Since it works as a percentage, map size shouldn't be a factor. Also it gives everyone a game to skip if they don't have the time that month for all 4. This would give players who play all 4 maps a bit of an advantage in the 'oops' category though.

Another idea is to keep large maps limited to 80% water. Gives about

I like the suggestion to flip Large and Tiny with Standard and Small if we do keep large maps. I'll edit my post with those changes and see if I can get rid of any consecutive victory types that pop up.

Aeson, your Idea should work, but we should make sure we have a minimum amount of submissions, to prevent a person from having ONE REALLY good game and not submitting any more because he knows he was so lucky. (of course this may not end up being a problem, but It came to my mind)

Secondly, it doesn't look like you put tiny and large to the end, looks like you just made them first.

Well it would be best 3 out of 4. There wouldn't be any real reason to skip a game if you could play it. If you happened to do worse than the other 3 games it wouldn't hurt your percentage, but if you did better it would help. This keep everyone playing all 4 if they could, but wouldn't punish those that could only finish 3 of them for whatever reason.

Are you sure? I edited my post to switch them around. Looks like Standard, Small, Large, Tiny now.

I'm sure, here's how it looks to me

Tournament:

Large-->Tiny-->Standard-->Small
And best 3 out of 4 sounds good. Seems like all we need now is a start date and some games.

The first one being?

April 26th?
May 3rd? or
May 10th?

Edit: Sorry, I forgot that Plux had already laided the whole thing out. Could a Mod. please delete this post.

Now that Everything is in place we can sit back and wait for the games to begin.

We will stick with the Schedule made by plux and start on friday.

And Aesons plan for the Seasons and order of play look great!

Look forward to the game!

Another suggestion: maybe the 4 game of each season should be played by 4 different types of civs. For example, the first game would be a militaristic type civ, the second a religious, the third an expansionist, etc. I know each civ has 2 things, but the idea would be to try to mix it up as much as possible each season.

And the civ used should probably match up with the goal finish: India shouldnt be the civ in a conquest finish game.

Why not have Indians go for conquest. Or Zulus going for spaceship. It gives makes it more challenging.

Aeson, nice job. I want a large map game, because its unfair having just smaller maps. :goodjob:

Good idea Pearman. The civ rotation was discussed a bit in the initial chat, but never made it to the thread. The civ doesn't necessarily have to match up with the victory condition every time though. Everyone will be using the same civ so the difficulty will be the same regardless. We should go through each civ in a 4 season timeframe. Every 3 games we should try to have all 6 attributes present.

It might be good to try and time things so that the civs used don't coincide with the civs in the current GOTM's. There will probably have to be some overlapping though.

Season 1:

Russia (Exp/Sci): Standard/Low/Domination
Rome (Mil/Com): Small/High/Conquest
Egypt (Ind/Rel): Large/Low/Culture
France (Com/Ind): Tiny/High/Score

Season 2:

Babylon (Sci/Rel): Standard/High/Spaceship
Zulu (Exp/Mil): Small/Low/Score
Germany (Sci/Mil): Large/High/Domination
America (Exp/Ind): Tiny/Low/Conquest

Season 3:

India (Rel/Com): Standard/Low/Culture
Aztec (Mil/Rel): Small/High/Spaceship
Persia (Ind/Sci): Large/Low/Score
England (Exp/Com): Tiny/High/Domination

Season 4:

China (Mil/Ind): Standard/High/Score
Iroquois (Exp/Rel): Small/Low/Spaceship
Greece (Sci/Com): Large/High/Culture
Japan (Mil/Rel): Tiny/Low/Domination

What do you think? Any glaring discrepancies between the seasons from a civ 'power' standpoint? I would have to say season 4 looks somewhat more well balanced than the others. Which is why I made sure the Iroquois weren't on the Large/Culture game. I tried to keep the strongest civs seperated, as well as the weakest.

Who's making all the games anyway? And, will they all be the same map with different difficulties? I don't remember this every being resolved, but I don't think it will take long if it hasn't.

I just skimmed the thread so sorry if this has already been posted. Because you are going for one victory, will the others be turned off?

I talked to Chiefpaco today, and it sounds like he will have a 1.21f version of MapStat up and working very shortly. We shouldn't have to turn off Domination if everyone has access to a quick and easy tile counter.

It's a possibility to turn off the Cultural victory condition, as it seems counterintuitive to have to avoid. Selling off cultural improvements just to avoid winning...

The civ setup of season1 is too powerful. Rome being militaristic, and with legionare will be very dominant in the ancient era, and being small, and conquest, the game will end by the Middle Ages. Egypt's got big advantage in the culture area. They are suited for large maps and religious helps in culture victory.

Season 4 has some really powerful civs. Iroquios, and Japan and China are powerful and the domination victory suits their military attribute.

But I'm just trying to make it harder, so we don't have games in which a certain civ has a big advantage on the map (Aztecs on small,conquest...Egypt on large, culture).

Anyway keep up the good work, Aeson. :goodjob:

i see what your saying God, but if u think the games will be too easy for u, play in a higher division!

people have selected a division to suit their level - if we start making the games deliberately more difficult than they would normally be for that difficulty, the whole process of picking a level u are comfortable at was pointless

Thanks God. I agree with your analysis. We can further balance out the seasons with the map settings as well though. So I was just trying to get it somewhat close while not overlapping too much with the GOTM civs during each season.

Here are some settings that I think would make each season both interesting and balanced. And of course give us a wide range of map settings! A little tougher maps for 1 & 4 to offset their more powerful civ settings, and mostly 80% water maps on the large setting, to make the games somewhat faster. Barbarian and Landform Age settings could always be random, just to keep everyone guessing a bit.

Hows this look?
