Does anyone have any qualms about usuing Civ3 units in a Civ2 scenario? Let me know your thoughts... :hmm:

I see no reason to do that. They aren't much better looking than the units already available for download for Civ2. But if you're asking if I'd protest or think less of a scenario that does uses some, then no. I personally don't care very much about where the units came from, as long as I can differentiate between the unit types.

Ok good. I'm about 90% of the way through a scenario called "Twilight Rome" for Civ 2 MGE where I've made my own multi-units out of Civ 3 units. I'm trying to make it one of the best, so I'd thought I'd get some outside opinions first.

Oh yeah, by the way, the scenario is based on the collapse of the Roman Empire. I've tweaked history enough to make it fun, but everything else (cities, units, events, graphics) are all true to fact. More to come on this later... :crazyeye:

How the heck is it possible to make Civ 2 units out of Civ 3 units?

Two words: "Cut" and "Paste." All one needs to do is have an image of a Civ3 unit, and paste it into a Units.gif for a scenario, modpack, or whatever.

Is this using the Civ2 Editor?

Actually, most of the work was done using the basic paint program that comes with Win 98. I grabbed the units from Civ 3 using the awesome program "Flicster", which is available on the Civ 3 forums. After capturing a unit I resived it to fit the Civ 2 unit template, then by using different frames from the same unit file I created a "multi-unit" effect. After some further touch up work and color modification, I added a few new things of my own design. Overall the effect works well in depicting "armies" or groups.

I hope to use the units in my Twilight Rome scenario, if I get around to creating the BAT files for it. Also, I'm going to have to ask someone about the Copyright infringement policy when dealing with the PTW units, as I have captured some of those to create "leader" units in the scenario.

Anyways, here's a gif of some of the units I've put together (none using PTW units). I do have to credit CivGeneral and Bebro for the ballista and the legion units I used in the intial grab. I just couldn't resist, they were to good to pass up. All the others are modified Civ 3.

Tell me what you guys think.

:D :D

Here are some more units. The Trebuchet is originally by Jimmy H and Kilroy and the Skirmishers (guys with pikes) are originally by Jimmy H. The viking longboats came from somewhere.

I am starting to agree with Promoteus in that maybe I should just focus on having single unit conversions. The multi-units come out nice sometimes, but they can get rather blurry as you go on.

Not at all! As a matter of fact, I was planning on making a Civ 3 MOD for Civ 2 over the summer.
