Civ 4 Complete Patch Problem

I'm trying to install the latest patch 1.74 but it keeps telling me that the civ 4 game is not installed.

I tried 1.31 and 1.61 but they say the same thing.

complete is already patched to 1.74, 2.13 and 3.13 - the only patch that should work and is necessary is 3.17

I have just set up an account / loggin for multiplayer games, when I login:

(1) I get a message telling me I do not have the latest patch 174

(2) that it will now download from the server

(3) the download completes fine, then I am told that the program needs to exit to complete the installation.

(4)I select 'ok' and it exits back to the desktop then does nothing.

When I try and login to the sever again it reverts back to step (1) and repeats. I desperately want to pley against my mates online but this f*ing game won't let me, when I login and the patch is downloading I can even see my mates user names on the list of active players in the background! Arrrrh

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP

Tried to download the 1.7.4 patch from the Direct2Drive site, download complete went to setup started setup got the following error message:

Error Number: 0X80040702
Description: Failed to load DLLSETUP
Setup will now terminate.

Now what?

are you using civ4 complete? or just the d2d Civ4?

'civ4 complete' = CDROM version?

I downloaded the d2d civ4 patch for the d2d civ4 game.

as far as I know d2s sells both the standalone games as well as a combined product. since you posted in a thread for the combined civ4+warlords+bts (i.e. Civ4 Complete) I wanted to know what you are using...

as for your error message: try contacting d2d - its their installer and it is much different from the one for the cd version.
The error code itself: does it specify which dll it cannot find?

Sorry fairly new to site just posted in a few places to try and get some help, I realy want to play online!

I'll e-mail d2d today, I tried wrote it before but for some reason my message came out with a silly little face in place of the :SETUP (just disabled them)

there are a few reasons for this apparently. First of all, install the newest DirectX9c:

then try to reinstall the patch

That message came up as I was trying to install patch 1.74. I updated my directx 9.0c and still received that message. I'm out of ideas now =/ Help please
