Civ 4 patch issues

Ok, so I have been playing CIV4 fine and dandy, solo and whatnot, and now I desire to play online. I didn't realize there were any patches, and now I realize there are about 7 of these things. I started going backwards, to the 1.61 patch, assuming I had to start with the first one, then go in succession to the last and final one. However when I tried to execute the 1.61 patch, I got a response that said:

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civ4 is installed.

The update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

What am I missing here? Am I right in assuming I have to start with the oldest one, then continue to execute the ones that fall in order after?

I have the 1.61, 1.74, 3.03, 3.13, and 3.17 which then I assumed would've let me install the 3.19 for online play.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I don't mind playing solo, but I would really like to play a direct IP game and also be able to play online multi-player as well.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

I guess I should also say that before I got into this patch mess, I did attempt to DL the 3.19 patch, which it said had installed, until of course I started it back up and it gave me the same prompt about needing the patch which it said was already installed. Is that my problem? Did attempting to install the 3.19 before putting in the other patches somehow screw up the whole thing? Whay would I get a prompt telling me it doesn't detect any version of CIV4 when it is clearly installed on my computer and I am able to play it.?

Difficult to say what's going on without knowing what version of Civilization you're running, but;

Patches 1.x are for Vanilla (1.61 being the last one)
Patches 2.x are for Warlords (not sure what the last one here is)
Patches 3.x are for Beyond the Sword (3.19 being the last one)

Whichever unpatched version you are running, the only one you'll ever need is the last one as each patch includes the contents of previous patches. So for example, with Beyond the Sword unpatched you only need 3.19, not all the previous 3.x patches.

This might be where things have gone wrong if you've been trying to install multiple patches, the install has probably got its knickers in a twist and doesn't know what the hell is going on.

I'd be tempted to uninstall Civilization entirely and install from fresh. Instead of using the built in patch download option in-game (which can be problematic anyway), download the relevant patch from CivFanatics and install prior to going into the game.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help. I am running the Beyond the Sword complete package. I think I am going to reinstall, and use the advice you just gave me. Seriously, Thanks a lot. I will let you know if it works or not.:goodjob:

I also have a copy of Civ4 Complete. After you reinstall the game, please check each version, Vanilla, Warlords and BTS, to see what version installs. For me, Vanilla and Warlords were updated already, but I needed to apply the BTS 3.19 patch I downloaded from this site.

If your Vanilla is not 1.74 or your Warlords is not 2.13, when applying the patches, please apply Vanilla 1.74 first, then Warlords 2.13 and finally, BTS 3.19. The patches change the .dll game file, BTS changes Vanilla and Warlords, so you need the BTS 3.19 last.

Best of luck.
