I am definately buying Civ5 as soon as it comes out by I am trying to determine how to buy it. I have some Best Buy gift certificates so I was leaning toward that but are there any advantages to buying the download version?

Also, will I be able to install it on multiple computers like the Civ4 Complete?

Unless you're going to shell out $60 for the digital deluxe version, no.

Buying it online or in store is still going to get you the full Steam version. You're essentially buying a CD-key either way.

You will be able to install it and play it on as many computers as you like, however, you will only be able to play it on one computer AT A TIME that is logged into Steam.

I agree with Iceciro. The only reason to buy either version, digitail or disc, would be because your going for a preorder bonus, or digitial deluxe. If you dont plan on preordering, or you dont want the deluxe(digitail only), then spend your best buy gift cards, because like Iceciro stated your basicly buying a key either way.

If I do the digital deluxe version, will I be able to install that on different computers? I want it on my desktop and laptop for when I am traveling.

Yes you can install it on different computers but you can't play with both at the same time.

But that would be illegal. And this forum doesn't allow you to tell people how to do things illegally.

Wrong.

Account sharing is against Steam EULA, which means you can't give your account to someone else to play Civ5.

But if you want to play Civ5 on 2 computers (or 10 computers) at the same time, you can do it.

Yep. Also if you save your game to the "Steam Cloud" on one computer, you can load that save from the other so long as it is online. It's pretty sweet. :)

I got the digital version because they're the same price, and hitting the download button is a lot more convenient for me then getting to a store that will have copies instead of the "you should have pre-ordered" speech that EB likes to do.

That Steam Cloud thing sounds cool. I was planning on transferring saves using a flash drive.

Also, I hate the preorder speech. I got the preorder speech for Call of Duty 4 once and there wasn't even a preorder bonus. They had a ton of copies and the guy said I should of preordered. I just asked "Why?" and he didn't have an answer.

What is a pre-order speech?

Get the deluxe edition if you can. Otherwise I would go for the boxed version, because then I would have a box. I like those boxes and I am bummed I do not have one with the deluxe edition. :(

Personally I don't understand the big push for preordering, and I hate that they give special content to people who do preorder. All this means is that when I use my giftcard to buy the game from a store I get screwed when I'm still getting a game when it comes out. And honestly the deluxe edition is not worth an extra $10 when all you really get is one extra Civ. But that's enough for my rant.

Three more questions:

1. Does the boxed version include a paper manual and/or tech chart?

2. Does the Steam version include the free Double Civ deal later on like D2D does?

3. Are all game updates through Steam? (Reason I ask this is because I bought a game a while ago on D2D and would have to wait for a D2D patch which came later than the manufacturer's patch).

All you get in a boxed version is a quick start thing. Manual is PDF only. free DLC is a D2D extra. Since its a steam game all updates go through steam.

Cool, I think I am going to get the D2D deluxe edition. I can always use my Best Buy certificates on other things.

YOu can only play the same copy of civ V one machine. You can install it on many machines but can't play it on the both machines at the same time.

I'm the opposite. Boxes just sit on my shelf collecting dust til I get around to throwing them away.

Digital download, all the way baby.

Civ 5 uses a PDF manual no matter which way you go. Unless you're a box collector, all buying physical does is make you need to store a box and disc.

The boxed game just comes with a pamflet.

Steam does not include the Double Civ Deal

Steam will be the only place that gets patches, (maybe D2D will too but later as you say), however even if you buy the D2D edition, you have to register the code with Steam and have steam installed, so you will get your updates, the D2D download/patching software can just be removed after installing Steam and linking your purchase to it by CD-Key I guess.

Well, flash drive won't be necessary with Steam cloud unless your not logging in online on Steam (as thats needed for cloud to work) on the laptop, because your on a train or whatever, in which case, revert back to the flash drive, or turn your laptop onto online mode while your still at the house and load the save file from Cloud, and then re-save onto the laptop's hard drive, and then go offline, and later when your back home, go online and save back into cloud. Either way.

As for the pre-order, on Steam anyway you will get £10 discount, and a bonus cradle of the civilisation map, (however all of those maps can be brought as DLC later on too).

Cool, I think I am going to get the D2D deluxe edition. I can always use my Best Buy certificates on other things.

Good enough choice, pre-ordering it would be cheaper and get you a free map, the only problem is D2D doesn't allow pre-loading so you won't be able to download the game till release day.

I'm a big fan of having a disc. I'm still not yet trusting of steam to buy only digitally. I don't like the fact that with games I buy on Steam if Steam ever goes under (granted unlikely, but possible) my games are gone, since technically with steam you only ever rent games from them, you don't technically own it. This game being steam powered scares me because now I can't loan it to a friend, or sell it (granted I would never sell Civ) later. I really like that I won't need a disc to play the game, but with the last patch I could play BTS without a disc and I wasn't restricted to Steam only.

Technically speaking, there is nothing in the EULA that says you can't. I would guess that Valve just doesn't want to admit to a flaw in their system and thereby deter 3rd party game companies from using Steam. Now, maybe they can argue this is a "transfer" of account, if someone else is using your account offline. Who knows, I'm not a lawyer. It is certainly a gray area, and whether they even want us to talk about such things on a forum like this, that's questionable.

In any event, to talk about the main topic, I ultimately decided to preorder a digital version after finding out that the boxed version didn't come with a hefty manual. They make great reading material while visiting the porcelain goddess. :p
