Is it true you will need to be online in order to play this game?

If so, I will not be purchasing it.

You need to install the Steam client, register an account, and log into it while connected to the internet once to verify your purchase of the game. After this, you can toggle Steam to boot in offline mode and throw away your modem forever, you'll never need to log in again as long as you don't screw with your log-in credentials.

...because the game is sure to be perfect on release day and there is no chance you will want/need to download any patches (which must be obtained by...going online through Steam).
Oh well, still... if you wait for the patch then you can definitely go offline and throw away your modem because the game is sure to be perfect once it's patched, after all how many civ games in the past have needed multiple patches.
Oh wait....

It was a joke. The OP has an issue with DRM that makes him be online constantly, I reassured him that he didn't.

necrosmith did not ask whether he needed to be online constantly, only whether he needed to be online. The answer to that is still a yes.

Funny I had to be online in order to download a patch from CFC for Civ 4.

Over-parsing (and somewhat faulty logic). He also did not ask if you needed to be online to register/install the game - only if you needed to be online to play.

Can you play the game while offline? Yes.
Therefore, you do not need to be online to play the game.

Simple answer: You are required to be online exactly once during installation. Any internet-based features like patches, online play, etc, will require you to login (obviously).

Except that playing the game requires installation, thereby requiring online connectivity to play. Unless you can figure out how to play the game without installing it? :crazyeye:

Moderator Action: As per our policy (read the Notice Board, please): please direct the discussion about Steam to one of the existing open threads. This one is closed. Question is answered, just to recap:
The game will require authentication via Steam, this will require being online at some point during installation and for any patching needs. The Steam client will always need to run, but can be set to be offline after initial installation.
