I don't know - I stopped playing Civ6 before I got my Steam Deck.
However, I did play some Civ6 on the Nintendo Switch, and I didn't care for it. The hardware was just not good enough - the controls were...fine but not as quick to use as a keyboard and mouse and clearly the controller scheme was an "after the fact" addition. The whole experience was forcibly much slowed down compared to the PC. I will note that Civ6 was never "Verified" on the Steam Deck and only seen as "Playable".
Getting Civ7 verified means (I hope) they've smoothed over some of the issues with Civ6. The hardware is leagues ahead of the Switch, and the previews have shown that the UI has been built from the ground up to be more usable for controllers. Additionally, the trackpads on the Steam Deck can make a huge difference, as well as being able to completely customize the control scheme.
That being said, this is very much a supplemental method of play for me. Regardless of how much they optimize it for the Deck it still won't truly compete with playing on my desktop...but it will be really nice to have the option to play on the go or when keeping my wife company as she reads in bed.

I takes some getting used to, but I had no problem playing it on the Switch control wise. Completed 3 games or so and my daughter many more. Still that hardware had a hard time running it, from what I've seen (videos) that is not the case for the Steam Deck. That said, don't have one (yet) so haven't been able to test it myself.
I suspect this may mean that the radial menu we've seen in the PS5 trailer is also available on PC for people that are going to use the controller (and now can).
Its relatively okay. Played a few games on steam deck but you could tell it wasn't made for steam deck. I suspect civ 7 will be a significant improvement if it has actually been verified
I think practically everyone here is forgetting about the touchpads, which functions identically to trackpads. Any mouse game based game is easily playable in handheld mode with the Deck.
I’ve got one and actually use it docked with keyboard and mouse 90% of the time, and it’s had zero issue running VI in the little I’ve played. Runs V like a dream lol, but I’m very excited to try VII on it. Its a great, very cheap, gaming PC
I've played a bit on the Steam Deck the past few days.
- Controls take some getting used to and I've definitely done things I didn't intend to do. Fortunately, I've found the touchscreen to work well.
- Runs smooth as butter. Seriously. I've set graphics to low (no reason for anything higher on the Deck as the screen is small) and it still looks great - no performance issues either into the Exploration Age on a small map. Disabling intro movies makes it start up like a thousand times faster than Civ6 ever did.
- You can download and install mods directly on the Deck, which is great news obviously, but also opens up some nice opportunities for some Steam Deck specific UI enhancement mods.
Overall working really great, and thrilled about how easy it was to get mods on there.
i installed a steam deck recovery iso to my pc and it runs flawlessly. i think windows are in trouble if valve moves this operating system to pc officially.
civ 7 has a nice kick to it compared to the flat trundle you get on windows 10.
Don't forget you can install mods on the Deck too! And I'm loving starting a game on the Deck and continuing on the PC via the Crossplay saves once I hit Modern. Not for performance reasons - I like being able to force end turn in the race towards victory.
