The last civ of the Exploration Age we have to discuss is Spain. The Spanish are an expansionist and militaristic civilization with a starting bias towards coastal terrain. Their associated wonder is El Escorial, which gives a base +3 happiness, an extra +4 happiness to cities within 7 tiles of the wonder, +1 settlement limit, and 3 relic slots. They can be unlocked by playing as Carthage, Greece, or Rome in the antiquity age, by choosing Isabella, Augustus, Charlemagne, either Frederich, Lafayette, Machiavelli, either Napolean, Benjamin Franklin, or Simon Bolivar, or by simply reconquering a lost settlement during the antiquity age. They automatically unlock Mexico in the modern age.

Their unique ability is Siglo de Oro, which gives +15% gold towards converting a town to a city, increased to +30% in distant lands.
Their unique military unit is the Tercio, a swordsman replacement with +2 CS that also gives adjacent units +3 CS against cavalry.
Their unique civilian unit is the Conquistador, a great person with a wide range of possible effects. I’m not going to summarize them all but they generally give free units in distant lands, bonus gold for different features, increased movement/sight, or a new town through settling or conversion. They can only be trained in settlements with a wharf.
Their unique buildings are the Casa Consistorial (base +5 culture, with bonus culture for adjacent quarters or wonders) and the Case de Contratacion (base +5 gold, with bonus gold for adjacent resources, navigable rivers, or wonders). Both of these can only be built on coastal terrain, and together they form the unique quarter the Plaza, which gives +2 gold in that settlement for every settlement in distant lands.

Spanish Civics:
Council of the Indies – unlocks the Casa Consistorial, the Conquista tradition, and at mastery unlocks the Casa de Contratacion and gives treasure fleets +1 movement.
Armada – unlocks the Great and Most Fortunate Navy tradition and gives fleet commanders the flotilla promotion. At mastery all embarked units get +2 movement.
New World Riches – unlocks the Cerro Rico tradition, gives +10% food and production to distant lands settlements, and at mastery unlocks El Escorial and gives +1 settlement limit

Spanish Traditions:
Conquista - +4 CS for all units in distant lands
Great and Most Fortunate Navy - +50% production towards naval units and -1 gold maintenance towards naval units
Cerro Rico - +2 gold for each resource

What are your thoughts on the Spanish? Strong, weak, or just right? Any particular strategies or approaches you enjoy with them, or any areas you think they struggle to compete? Which leaders or other civs make for good pairings for Spain? Let’s discuss!
