Well after a long period of being burnt out completely with the entire civ series I decided to pick up civ1 and civ2 the other day. In the past few days I haven't finished a game of civ1 but I've won 3 prince games and just recently a king game of good ol' civ2. This is pretty good considering the only serious civ2 playing I had done in the last few years was a couple of king games a year or so ago and then some online play with a few people from 'poly. Anyways I just thought I'd share that I actually had fun playing civilization again, something I wasn't sure would happen.

And for the record the wins weren't that impressive, I think the king game was a 79% and the prince games were around 95%. One was a space race win and the others were all conquest.

Yeah, the only drawback to taking a break is that I suck now. The best city sites and whatnot aren't coming as naturally as they did before but at least I'm having fun. For a while only online games were even mildly interesting to me, but I'll admit some of those were pretty damn fun.

Does CFC ever hold organized multiplayer civ games? I wouldn't know since I've only played with one person from CFC and it wasn't via CFC that we decided to play. It just seems like it would be a good idea to organize a game at the one place you have thousands of civ fans...

Yeah I took a look at that after making my last post. Maybe if we found a good group that could keep up a good pace in a game and posted a lot about how much fun it was we could stir some interest. Who knows. Anyways something must be done. Lol we could always stir the right and left wingers up against each other in OT(as if that needed any doing) and convince them that civ2 is the best way to decide who the next president should be. Or, they could bet their votes on the outcome of the game...

I think the majority of people seem to have moved onto Civ3 mp, thats what the number of posts seems to indicate and the same thing happened at Gamecatcher with the MP games moving on to Civ3...

Yeah I really don't hold out much hope for a huge online civ2 mp movement but I think if the right group could be found it could at least provide entertainment for those who would willingly dedicate themselves.

I doubt I could really go back to playing Civ2 now that I have gotten used to Civ3 and the hassle of trying to get MGE to work again doesn't really appeal to me.

We had a good group for awhile... We acutally had about 20 PBEM games going at once... But, one person would cheat and it would destroy the 4 games they were playing in, another would get too busy to play and it would kill the 2 games they were in...

Now were down to 5 or 6 players who seem to be able to stick with it. Usually, each new players that joins can help get one or two games up and running.

Are multiplayer games similar to succession games?

No. In multiplayer games, you have two or more human players, each running their own civ. In a succession game, you have several human players taking turns playing the same civ. Usually a player plays about 10 turns than hands off to the next player.

PBEMs are GREAT :crazyeye:

When you are playing with a bunch of strong players, things happen that you would never dream about when playing against the AI.
The only drawback is that it is almost impossible to play quickly and one single turn sometimes happens to last a month (I am currently playing 3 PBEMs over at Apolyton: the 3 of them started more than 3 years ago :) ).

How do you save these games? How do you know when it's your turn without staying at the computer the whole time and waiting? What version do you have to have?

I think you can only do any type of Multiplayer game on MGE and ToT. Not sure about FW, but I have my doubts. I definitely know you can't on Classic, since I own that one.

Go into the screen where you can adjust the Game Options, and look at the top of that menu. There should be a version number up there. If it's 2.42 it's Classic, and if it's 2.78 it's Civ2: Fantastic Worlds. The others have numbers too, I think, but I can't remember off the bat.
