Two questions: (the image is for both questions)

[1] recently my Civ I has been crashing when I click the "CHANGE (production)" button in the City Display. Is there a fix for this other than reinstalling?

[1] WORK-AROUND: save the game BEFORE you click the "CHANGE" button.

===========

[2] DOSBox, besides being awesome, runs Civ I is a small window. I have played with its config file, but only the Status Window changes - not the window for the game (Civ I). Is there a way to set the Civ I window?

[2] SOLUTION: click on the Start Menu for the DOSBox Options. A notepad file opens and the first editable line is for "full screen." Set it to "true". It will still allow screen shots, but you have to paste the screen shot in Paint before you close the game.

Also, you can try using the "C" key to open the Change Production dialog...

C = crash :/

(it did the on the first try)

The "work around" works, but it is annoying b/c I have to leave the City Display before I change the production, then go back into the City Display to change the production, and if it crashes... *sigh*

...maybe I'll just reinstall.

What version of CIV DOS are you using? Inspired by your posted image this sounds like the advisor bug. I have only vague familiarity of this bug. If my memory serves the solution, other than using a later version, is to turn off Instance Advice (click Game - Options).

I don't believe the Instant Advice bug was ever completely fixed.

Thanks to ImageShack.us for free image hosting.

I saved my save games (CIV#.SAV) and then uninstalled (DEL *.*) and then reinstalled. The problem is gone, but this may only be temporary.

I also uninstalled/reinstalled DOSBox and now I am getting "MSCDEX not loaded."

All this was working until I tried to fix this problem...

Dack is correct: always turn Instant Advice off.

As for DOSBox, if you want a larger window, use the windowresolution option and, optionally, a scaler.

Full screen:
This was solved in the op.

Instant Advice:
Doing a search for string "advice" and "adv" there is not such string in any config/option file for DOSBox 0.74.

MSCDEX not installed:
I learned that now DOSBox does not recognize my cd player. So now I run this command:

mount h d:\ -t cdrom

DOSBox then installs MSCDEX. But even with the Civ I disc in the drive it cannot find the drive. I will go to the DB devs on this one and will post the fix here.

Addendum:

"mount h d:\ -t cdrom" is wrong. You are mounting your real D drive as the virtual H drive in DOSBox.

You want "mount d h:\ -t cdrom"

I tried it and it worked.

(NOTE: one of these days I have to donate hard cash to these two forums... CivFans and DOSBox... preferably before the Apocalypse.)

For full screen. I gave an answer on how to create a larger window.

It's an option in Civilization, not DOSBox.

Copy the CIV dir to the local drive.

Wow it's been like over 15 years since I've last played original Civilization. That picture brought back memories. Where have the years gone?!?!?

LivingDog, I have noticed that you are loading your images to imageshack.us.

This web site seems to want to scam people with the fake anti-virus virus and other virus'.
I would advise attaching your image to your civfantics post rather than using a out side free service.
Try a google “imageshack virus”

To Other viewers beware!

This is the first I have ever heard of it. After doing the search I decided to never use them again. But I never have had a problem since I use Firefox for all browsing. So the attached image is as is - using Civfans file attacherator. The attached image is from "Office Space" and is only the size of an avatar - no biggie. :)

Thanks for the "heads-up" Dack.
