Civ I for DOS on a bootable CD
The idea is to make a bootable CD. Using various free downloads, some old shareware programs. The evaluation version of an ISO program (maybe you will like it so much you will purchase it). Some programs I wrote to tie it all together. I have modified CIV$ to save the MAP & SVE files to hard drive (FAT) or a floppy. The finished CD boots up and loads CIV onto a RAM-drive and runs it there. It runs in it's full unencumbered DOS glory. I became tired of the slow movements in the various Windows environments (even Dosbox). The instructions will be cookbook style, no theory just the steps to do it.
Required of you:
1) You must have your own legal copy of CIV for DOS (No CIV files are provided).
If you don't own a copy see DOS Civilization available & forum rules
2) Download a few files from the Internet save them in a folder following instructions from MakeCivCD
With a 56k dialup the total download time for the following should be 15 to 20 min
ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/arcers/pk250dos.exe see note
http://65.108.230.150/downloads/mybootdisks_com/nu2/bfd107.zip
ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/gifutil/st201f.zip see note
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/CIV$0790.ZIP
http://www.magiciso.com/Setup_MagicISO.exe
3) Download MakeCivCD.ZIP about 6 min at 56k
MakeCivCD uses the Windows Installer (MSI files) to install. In XP and Win 2000 unZIP the downloaded file MakeCivCD.ZIP and double click on the MakeCivCD.msi file. Those using 95/98/ME must first Download Windows Installer 2.0 for 95/98/ME (1.7 mb) and install it.
After installation you will get the following Icon on your desktop double click on it follow instructions.

All constructive criticism welcome.

Note October 11, 2005: As is the case with old dos utilities; they get harder to find and there web sites seem to disappear. PK250DOS & st201f are

ftp://ftp.externet.hu/pub/mirror/sac/graph/st201f.zip
The method used here is "Bart's way to create bootable CD-Roms". I've played CIV dos using a bootable CD and Ram drive for about two years. If you stumble across this and have any difficulty feel free to e-mail me.
