a friend of mine has heard a rumor about civ 2 will be ported for the Nintendo DS i was wondering if anyone could comform this since this would help me make my final descision on DS or PSP :D

ds makes a lot of sense especially with the touchscreen. i dunno how they would do it without touchscreen but the n-gage version looks a dead cert. i read an interview with sid where he apparently said that the ds was an exciting games platform which he was looking in to (or something like that). they have to do it: what civ player wouldnt go and buy a ds if civ came out on it??? .......... thats right: everyone would own one. (and imagine multiplayer via wi-fi)!!!!!!

Wouldn't they need the source code to port Civ 2 over to any other console / handheld..?

Civ for DS would be PERFECT and we just might get it!

There was an interview with Sid Meier where he praised the DS as a possible platform for strategic games, because of the touchscreen and all that...

IIRC he also mentioned how a direct port wouldn't be such a great idea, but how a modified DS-specific game engine should be developed.
He explicitly said that no such game is in the works right now, but they're seriously considerig one, and should probably do it soon...

So probably, some kind of Civ, Col or A Centauri spin-off will eventually emerge on DS.
After all, Nintendo already has a great strategy franchise (Advance Wars DS is the latest) and Age of Empires for DS should be out in february... DS really is a fantastic platform for strategy games, it's pitty that Nintendo was held back with that "kiddy image" among casual gamers.

Nintendo's image is starting to change because of the hype for Revolution consoles. Sony was so scared they had to announce the PS3 was region-free just to not be embarrassed. The Revolution's controller is the most talked about thing of the year and the DS still outsells the competition because of the PSP's failure to attract hardly anybody outside of the 13-20 core audience that Sony and Microsoft target. Nintendo gets labeled with a bad image because of their success 20 years ago and the crappy Squaresoft publisher that somehow is popular with the Playstation-obsessed audience. Their atrocious Final Fantasy games are a perfect example. Final Fantasy VII was one of the worst games of all time, but it gets hyped as great and overshadows The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is regarded as one of the best games ever for good reason. Nintendo realizes that they must make their next Zelda better than Ocarina of Time so it will be and that will change things.

The other thing will be that the PSP-owner spin will disappear. These people are trying to hijack the game industry and make it put out only First Person Shooters and RPGs, the 2 worst genres. The DS is going to be so successful that we see new genres introduced. Nintendo lives up to its word. They say they want to innovate and they bring out brain training and dog simulators. Next are travel guides and cooking sims.

Until I actually see an article from a legit source I don't buy it. It's just wishful thinking I imagine.

OK, here's the link from Nokia about the N-gage

http://www.n-gage.com/en-US/games/gamedata/civilization.htm

The cover art looks like Civ II, and the tiny screen shot looks like Civ II,
but they're calling it just "Civilization". Can't tell anything about the
rules or gameplay, from the advert.

Ok that is cool. The part I'm not sold on is the DS speculation. I had heard something about the NGage though. I would buy it... if I had an NGage. It would be sweet if it came out for DS, but I really don't see it happening.

Why not?

My impression is that a Nintendo DS is "bigger" (market wise) machine, than the n-gage, or am I missguided?
