Civ II for PSone: question

It should work but please don't go buy a PS2 to play Civ2.Unlike Nintendo,Sony cares about customers and generally make things backwards compatible.

Scour thru the jewel cases at your computer store.Civ2 is still available.

Thanks. I've got the game already and a PStwo but it doesn't work. And this is odd, because I had been told that every game of the PSone could be played on the PStwo as well.

So I'm wondering If there's somebody out there whose PStwo does run civII.

My version of Civ-2 for the PSX (SLES 01794) started just fine on my European PS2 . (Smalll world, 3 civs,).

Do you have the right version?
Do you have a PS1 memory module installed (PS2 memorys wont work with PS1 games) ?
Is it an original?
If not is it patched and is your PS2 chipped?

Also if you DO have a pirated copy you shouldnt discuss it in these fora as this site doesnt condone piracy.

:)

No, the PS2 is not chipped. It's European and new.
The game is new, ORIGINAL and it's from the U.S. for a PSone.
And i don't have a PSone memory card.

So I need a PSone memory card to play my CivII in a PS2 ? Is that right ? Xnks for the feedback.

OUCH!!! *THAT* is why you have problems. You can *NOT* play US-version games on your european PS2. And vice versa. Same with japanese games.

The Playstation is region coded just like DVD:s Sony wanted to controll what games were sold were and at what price...

Actually some people justify the "chipping" with the argument that chipping allows them the possibility to play import games, in MY opinion a valid argument for chipping, though I havent bothered to chip my PS2...yet (my PSOne on the other hand... ) :) .

Personnally I think that region coding is morally contemptiible and its a disgrace that the authoroties havent moved against it as violating freetrade regulations. Just another example of how big bussiness is "screwing" the consumers.

Sooo. You have *FOUR* choises:

ONE: MOD your PS2 by chipping it.

TWO: Use a "boot" CD, there are disks that allow the play of import games *WITHOUT* chipping your unit, but I dont know much else of were to get it.

THREE: Get yourself a PS ONE that is either american or chipped.

FOUR: The simplest solution... BUY a european copy of Civ-2. It should be available from eBay... just (13/9 1300GMT) found at least 2 copies for sale, one IS a UK/PAL version (current bid 1.50 UK£) , the other is sold by a Britt and PROPABLY a UK/PAL version(current bid 5.00 UK£). You can always mail the seller and ask.

PS One games can *ONLY* save to PSone memories (even when playing on a PS2 machine). And PS2 games *ONLY* to PS2 memories. Soo if you have both PS1 and PS2 *games*, you *will* need *both* type of memories to *save* games when playing them on a *PS 2*. Not all games require a memory to *PLAY* (but obviously you do need them to save...)

Hope this helps.

There aren't that many PS Civ players, so I doubt you'll get much of a response.

Are most PS one games compatible with a PS two?

YES all PS-One games are compatible with the PS2. That was ONE of the arguments in favor of the PS2 (instead of other consoles) Lots of console gamers had a HUGE stock of PSone games and with a PS2 they/we can continue to play old favourites (like CIV2 :) ) but needing only one machine (PS2).

SO IS hardware extras: memories, joysticks, joypads, steering wheels etc.
Though the hardware might not necessarily work with *ALL* new PS2 games.
With many they do, except of course memories (se previous post).

Thanks a lot BlackAdder60, you've been very helpful. I´ll go for number 3 and 4. :)
Damn, I had no idea of that regional coding. I just bought my new PSone CivII from E-bay, agh !!! I'll have to buy a new "european" one now, aghhhhhhhhhhh !!!

I have just started a game of Civ-2 on my PS2 *without* a PSone memory installed.

The game will play fine, BUT when chosing the "SAVE GAME" command the game will not find a memory module even if a PS2 memory is installed.

ERGO: You CAN play Civ-2 (UK/PAL version) on a (european) PS2 without problems, BUT you WILL need a PS ONE memory to SAVE.

(Which is pretty much what SONY have been saying all the time)
