CIV III COMPLETE-ly crashes

I got CIV III COMPLETE v1.22 a few days ago, and beat CONQUESTS: MIDDLE AGES.

The box in the corner says I have 7 turns left, but since I took Jerusalem, many cities, and got over 30,000 Victory Points, it says that I won in 1437. Some victory screens show, and the last one is the one that usually comes up when you press F8. After that I assume it would put me in the Hall of Fame.

Instead, it crashes, and shows the screens attached in this message.

So I went on Civ Fanatics downloads section, and downloaded and installed the patch for Civ III v1.29f. When installing, I agreed to overwrite some original CIV III COMPLETE files. When I booted up the game, the left hand corner still says v1.22. I went and beat the MIDDLE AGES again, but the same crash happened.

How do I update CIV III COMPLETE to v1.29 and fix it?

The movie CRASH was awesome, but the computer version is bad.

Does it come on three discs, ie. three seperate installs? If so, try installing Vanilla then patch to 1.29 before installing 'PTW'/'Conquests'.

Edit: Obviously you will need to uninstall everything first; after doing so, I suggest running something like 'Crap Cleaner' (free download) before reinstalling.

I do not have Complete, but AFAIK it has all the patches applied. 1.29f is for vanilla and you would be hard pressed to fine one of those that was not already patched.

I never played the scenarios that come as they seem to all use Accelerated Production. I have however run into a crash after winning on some of the "completed scenarios". The last one was CCM.

I got the VC screen and then I got the screen where you see all the heads of state crying. I was not able to close it. I wrote that off to being on Win7. My point is that it may be an issue with the scenario or some file.

IIRC you can only get epic games in the HoF score. There is another for scenarios, but I may have that wrong.

Like Bucephalus mentioned, if you do a install be sure the register is not holding some left over stuff. I use regedit to check, but tools are easier.

Yes it has three discs, but they are not independent discs. By that I mean you have to install them at once. You put in disc 1 and it says 30% done, now put in disc 2, etc.
CivIII complete is one whole game without a vanilla- or apparently a patch! :nuke:

Please help.
The radiation from the crash is killing me! :science:

It is one continious install, but three games. You should find a start menu icon for vanilla, ptw and C3C. This is exactly what occurs, if you install the way you would if you bought them as they came out. IOW vanilla first, then PTW and then C3C.

Note that for those that got vanilla and then bought c3c, they only have two installs.

Civ 3 complete contains all 3 versions of civ 3, vanilla, Play the World and Conquests. It is supplied fully patched (usually) and the 1.22 version referred to is the latest patch for the final game - Conquests. You can see this mentioned in the error report: AppName: civ3conquests.exe AppVer: 1.22.0.0. The Civ3 1.29f you downloaded refers to the vanilla version of Civ which Conquests makes sure is patched to 1.29f before it install. You therefore reloaded a patch that was already installed. I am not sure however if doing that would mess up anything Conquests did when it installed so it may be advisable to uninstall and re-install from scratch.

When I moved to a Vista PC, I had problems with the game not having the rights to be able to right to the hall of fame, and it would crash after the warrior with the hammer told be how well I had done. Check that the game is able to write to the folder. Can you save a file there? Have you got the game set to run as administrator?

It seems that I have the same problem although I am on a Dell with Windows XP. It crashes about the same time as the warrior with the hammer. How do you check if the game can write to the Hall of Fame folder, and where is that folder? How do you know if you can save a file there and if the game is running as administrator?

I am looking at my C:\Firaxis games\Civilization III Complete Folder and see a Sounds, Art, Text Folders etc, but no Hall of Fame Folder.

Thanks.

To start a game with administrative rights, right click and select "Run as Administrator". (You can also change the properties so that is the default.)

I must admit when I did a conquests scenario on mine it crashed on victory also using vista, normal victories dont crash

I've had this problem for ages and thanks to Furiey came up with the solution this morning.

For background, I have Civ III Complete which I bought from a UK company called Sold Out. It comes on three discs (which I doubt contain Vanilla, PTW, and Conquests respectively). I'm running XP Pro Service Pack 3. This solution should work on other modes of installation / OSs but obviously I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway:

1) Open up your C: drive
2) Open Program Files
3) Find the Firaxis Games folder or whichever folder Civ III is held in
4) Right click and go to properties
5) Unselect 'Read-only' -> Apply
6) Select 'Apply changes to this folder, sub-folders and files' when another box opens up

Now you should be able to save each completed Conquest campaign to the hall of fame :goodjob:
