I had issues with my Civ III so I went out and bought the complete version. It now plays ok until I attack someone, and then it locks up? I also would like to know if I can change the resolution the game is playing in. Any help with these issues would be most appreciated.

This is really annoying. I used to play this game alot and stopped for a fair bit and now it wont even play. Is it nvidia drivers?

I'm not the best one to answer, but...

what are your machine specs?

what is running while you are playing the game?

I have a Intel PentiumD 3.73ee, Asus 8500GT, and 2 gigs of Corsair memory. When I play the firewall (Zonealarm), the antivirus (AVG), and antispyware (Mamutu) thats all.

Your machine is much newer than mine, so that doesn't help any.

ZoneAlarm, AVG and Mamutu. I can't see ZoneAlarm and C3C having any problems, since C3C doesn't try to go the internet. I don't use AVG but any anti-virus program should be able to determine that this game is not a threat. Mamutu I don't know. Google for it and find that they (Emis Software) just released their beta version of this new product a few days back, on October 25, 2007; see >>here<< for details; and then shortly after that, on November 11, 2007, the 'Real' version was released (>>and here<<).

A three week Beta test? That seems a bit short. I would suggest uninstalling Mamutu and replace it with Spybot Search and Destroy, Spywareblaster and AdAware. All three of these are free to download and use.

Mamutu is billed as an anti-virus enhancement, not anti-spyware, so it may not be protecting you like you think it is. The three programs I mentioned above are all anti-spyware; I use all three together. They don't need to be running all the time. I run all of them periodically as a group (Spybot to Spywareblaster and then on to AdAware). I would run them first, before doing any uninstalls, just to make sure you PC is clean.

I will give it a go without Mamutu running tomorrow and see what happens. I did some beta testing for them thats the only reason I have it installed, I dont normally use it.

I also would like to know if I can change the resolution the game is playing in. Any help with these issues would be most appreciated.

You can add "KeepRes=1" to your .ini file and Civ3 will run in the same resolution as your desktop. (I "borrowed" that answer from some other threads in this forum with the same question and everyone says it works. ;) )

I have Complete and run ZoneAlarm, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Symantec AV and have no trouble with the game. Have you tried reinstalling the game?

@CBob - Interesting idea to run 3 different anti-spyware programs. Do they find different problems? If so, maybe I'll try that.

Oddly I found using a smaller than huge map it doesnt happen? I wonder why I cant use the huge map.

Oddly I found using a smaller than huge map it doesnt happen? I wonder why I cant use the huge map.

I've got a game on a huge map, pangea land mass. Whenever I add or raze a city it takes a while for the game to digest and update itself. Not too long, though I've never timed it. It doesn't seem to be too long, anyway. :D

You may want to download CachemanXP (another freebie). This little jewel will tell you how much of your RAM is either being used or is available to use. You decide which one it will tell; I like to know how much I have left.

(And if you really want to dig into what is going on behind the scenes on your PC, download HijackThis.)

Given your system specs, I am puzzled by the issue you describe.

I am puzzeled to. I have Two gigs of ram so I cant be short on memory. I tried it with the standard map and it works perfect, but with the large or huge map it locks on any conflict. I am fairly PC savy and normally I dont have problems like this but I cant figure this out.

Finally I figured it out, somehow the video driver got corrupted. I completely uninstalled the card and removed all traces of the driver and reinstalled it and all seems ok now.

I give up. It worked for a day and now it locks on any conflict animation again. I am about to use this game as a clay pigeon.

You could turn combat animiations off; that can be done via Preferences; but I like to watch my units fight, so I really don't recommend that.

In cases like this, where nothing seems obvious, I tend to go back to basics in my troubleshooting. Clean out the spy ware, run a registry cleaner, defrag the hard drive, run a virus scan of the whole machine.

Before doing that I would uninstall/reinstall C3C first.

Does this happen on any other games or at any other times?

I like to watch them fight as well. I still think it may be a driver issue. It might be that the disk I got from the vendor is no good. I have a clean computer from a spyware standpoint and my registry is in good repair as well. I do defrag at least once a day and I have an antivirus that runs at all times and tests the whole drive system once a day. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times but its always the same result. I do seems to get occasional issues with Sid Mieirs Railroads as well. Its either drivers or the vcard.

So much for the easy stuff. :D

I think you might want to search the forum for "drivers" and also the video card that you have.

Second best would be to go the Civ III main site, whereever it is, and do the same thing. But I think you would have better results on this forum than that one. Along with this would be going to the Sid Meir's Railroads web site and searching for answers there, too.

Third best would be to visit the video card's web site, but you've already done this is if you've got the latest drivers.

If that fails, then Google for Civ III and drivers.

Quick flash of inspiration: are your DirectX drivers up to date?

I think its the card, or at least the bios. When I uninstalled it windows picks it up as a 8400E not a 8500GT, I can force it to intall the right driver but it seems to only work for a day or so and then it gets corrupt. I am gonna try checking the bios and perhaps reflashing it. If that doesnt work it will go back RMA.

Have you checked the chipset on the card? It could be that a mixup occured and you got an 8400E when you expected an 8500GT.

It seems very odd that the driver would be fine for a day and then get corrupted.

Uh, what happens if you let the PC think it is an 8400E; does that affect anything?

I have a question, I setup a senario useing a large earth map and it runs and loads fine when I place start locations and play normally, but when I setup afew countries with cities, it loads untill it says "configuring senario" then stops responding. Any ideas as to why it keeps crashing?

Back in 2005, Plotinus began a thread How to design a scenario. I would read through it. I've not done any modding or created any scenarios, so I'm not a good help for you.
