Every nation has abolished slavery. America was one of the last to do it. This is not ironic at all. Washington himself owned over 200 slaves, so tell me why its ironic that he would adopt slavery? He inherited them all. Oh yeah, once he was dead and his wife was dead he liberated his own personal slaves. That's hardly a huge sacrifice to make. If he was really worried about the morality so much, he would have done it in his lifetime.
