I feel strange as England being best friends with Spain & France during the age of cannons/rifles/cavalry.

Isabella urging me to switch to islam because "all the cool civs are doing it"

Every nation has abolished slavery. America was one of the last to do it. This is not ironic at all. Washington himself owned over 200 slaves, so tell me why its ironic that he would adopt slavery? He inherited them all. Oh yeah, once he was dead and his wife was dead he liberated his own personal slaves. That's hardly a huge sacrifice to make. If he was really worried about the morality so much, he would have done it in his lifetime.

kristopherb originally meant it to be America, but since the game doesnt say "America has adopted Slavery" he used washington because of the leader. Its still ironic and it was just used to point out America in general adopting slavery not just washington.

On topic: America(not washington:crazyeye: ) adopts mercantilism,The British adopt free market

Either way it is not ironic. I think you need to look up irony. America(or washington) adopting hereditary rule however, would fit the topic better.

Irony(Noun)-a use of words to express something other than and total opposite of the literal meaning.

Since America in history abolished slavery and was known for it,Washington adopting/imlementing it can be considered irony.

Russian saying his cossacks will run through my streets and make lewd gestures to my women even though he doesnt have the technology to make cossacks

I think a more appropriate definition for the purposes of this thread would be "incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result".

Still not seeing it since slavery was abolished more than 60 years after washington's death. America is only known for abolishing it because we had it so much longer than everyone else. Still not ironic. Try again.

Just to make a point to a previous poster, Great Britain was the first major power to abolish slavery (1830's) whereas in the US it was in the 1860's I believe.

Back to the point, Civ is full of irony, one of the reasons I've played it for over a decade!

Obligatory "Blackadder" quote:

Blackadder: Baldrick, have you no idea what irony is?
Baldrick: Yes, it's like goldy and bronzy only it's made out of iron.

I'll get my coat... :D

Thanks for the link to Blackadder - I didn't know the website existed until now.

You're welcome. Blackadder has to be one of my favorite series. It's got history and comedy and sharp dialogue in one package. Should dig out my DVD's again... :D
