Civ IV DVD ROM required?

Only an idiotic publisher/company would make a game olny available on DVD ATM.

GTA:San Andreas was Dvd-rom only. Don't recall its sales being bad.

If you don't have a Dvd-rom drive already, I doubt you have a good enough computer to run this game anyway.

Dvd drives have been around for years now, I actually can't even remember when I even put mine in my PC, probably atleast 3 years ago.

I'm sure by next year everthing will be Dvd only, since games are getting too big these days, and having 4-6 cd's is just ridiculous.

I build my own systems,as I'm sure many here do. I do have a DVD-ROM installed in my main machine, but I have 2 others more than capable of running Civ IV that do not..plus ,truely, the published specs are actually quite low even for a recommended system.

Yea...I guess I'm just use to being around people playing games like F.E.A.R and Call of Duty 2 and what not, seems the Civilization crowd is a different type of gamer.

Guess my point was that if this game truely is Dvd only, then there is no reason to complain about it with dvd-rom drives being mainstream today. But it looks like most people complaining are ones who pre-ordered thinking it would be CD's, then finding out it wasn't, then finding out it is, then isn't but was what it once use to be...:crazyeye:

I'm buying both Civ IV and Call of Duty 2 next week and I don't have a DVD drive. Call of Duty 2 is being released on both CD and DVD, but the DVD version costs $10 more.

I pre-ordered mine from the U.S. (EBgames.com) and i'm in canada.. Will mine be CD or DVD? I've heard many people say the U.S. version is CD and many say it's DVD. Any Clarification would be great. And my computer can run Civ4 without any problem and I don't have a dvd rom installed. (it's in my closet somewhere and I don't wanna have to take it out and hook it up.) So can people clarify this?

The entire game is 1.7 gigs uncompressed onto your hard drive. Thats a bit small for a DVD. More likely it's 2 CDs.

Not like TES IV: Oblivion, which will likely need 2 DVDs, one for all the voice acting, and one for the game.

Call EB! They're the ones you bought it from...but since their site has a box with "CD-Rom" version on it...we would have to conclude that it is indeed on CD's...

Come on folks! most of us have had DVD for some time now.

As a rule, games demand a lot of script, and with the return of movies for wonders etc. Civ IV should be rather a large program. I always like when the hard drive stored sections of the game are the elements that require the speed that a hard drive provides in loading the various files that need to be accessed quickly to continue the pace of the program. Things like movies are best stored on a DVD. When they are needed, these large files can be brought into the game at a point where a slight break is acceptable, even expected; like the dawning of a new wonder!

Using hard drive space for these events would be a waste of hard drive space as far as I am concerned. DVD storage capacities, and therefore the quality of the stored image, would be superior to CDs.

I will be disappointed if the game is on CDs, although I am sure only temporarily, and from the aspect of a failure to fully utilize the tech available. Once the game begins I will undoubtedly forget about these sort of technical issues.

Well i have a 1.8 512meg ram.64 mb graphics but no dvd player.
I am very dissapointed as i arent made of money either and shopping around the cheapest i can get one for is about 80 dollars, so with the game its up to 170$, oh and i was thinking about getting the strategy guide so all up about 200 for a game.bah

I dont see why they dont just put out both as in the states its so unfair.

I wont be able to get this game for a while yet now. And after all the prerelease info ive been reading got me so psyched about it, its going to be a awesome game.

Very dissapointed, i hope you save lots of money by going dvd only taketwo

a lot of europeans have dvd. a lot of average americans have simple cd-roms and if we're lucky a CDRW. if we have a dvd it's only for the tv possibly a dvd/vcr combo.

As to what we ordered, it said CD-ROM. shipping what was known to be a DVD when it was stated as CD-ROM would constitute Fraud. that's a legal point.

now, in a few months when I can afford a dvd drive, I may get one and install it. however, Saying that I should pay more money to get it now [extra money I don't have], because some money bags already has one is BS. The europeans may have to use the DVD version, but hey, they have universal health care.

I hope it's on DVD....... I hate having to install a bunch of CDs and swap between them....

Money bags? On the contrary... I got my first DVD-ROM in 1998. It was used and I bought it for $80. Back then that was way cheaper than buying a stand alone DVD player. It was the "money bags" who got standalone DVD players and didn't get DVD-ROMs.

Today you can get a new DVD-ROM for $20 (look in Newegg), let alone used ones. That's $6 cheaper than the cheapest standalone I've seen.

So why should we put up with several CDs to cater to a minority that does not have DVD-ROMs, especially when DVD-ROMs are so cheap? Hell, the video cards needed to play civ IV are several times more expensive than the DVD-ROMs. So why all the complaints about needing a DVD and no complaints about needing a modern 3d card? In 1998 you could get a cheap DVD-ROM as I did, but there was no way to get a 3d card that could run Civ IV.

I'm sure it will be on CD. A DVD player will play both CD and DVD so why would they have a DVD only release? Anyone that is seriously bothered about trading out multiple CDs during the install is kinda weak. It's not like you will need to change out Cd's during the game. I mean really why exclude any part of the customer base?

it's a matter of legal tender and truth in advertising. the bill of sale says CD-ROM. if they ship otherwise, that is breach of contract. by itself the dvd-rom maynot be that much. however when added to the game it is more money at a time.

I budgeted my quarterly not just monthly disposable funds toward the game. that means come 3 months later I could get one of those 'cheap' drives. that also means installing it. now some people may open up their pc every week, but not all of us.

the DVD stand alone or with a VCR combo [some have their only dvd built into a TV], is only for movies. most of the dvd's I've seen on friends computers somehow have a problems playing those same movies on the pc. so they have to have a DVD-ROM and a DVD player for the TV sererate.

I also have to wait on super saver shipping so I can't play it til about nov 7th any way.
$49.99 plus $29.99 [+shipping for that] is at least $79,98 [plus likely $9 shipping for the drive at least]... see $88 dollars for the game.

like I said, I may get a DVD drive later, but my budget won't handle it for a few months after buying the game.

If you really want a DVD just order the European version of the game.

How about we wait to complain until the game's actually available? Just a suggestion.

You got a point about those uncomfortable with opening up the computer, although replacing a CD/DVD drive is about the easiest thing to replace in a computer.

I guess that may be the case for some. My computer actually plays DVDs better than some standalone players I've seen (including Sony) and I built my PC three years ago, so it's hardly top of the line.

If you really want a DVD just order the European version of the game.

Then I'd have to fork out for shipping from Europe.

By the way, I bet it's more expensive to duplicate 6 cds than it is to duplicate 1 DVD. So the prices may be reduced by switching to DVD for such games. DVD also provides superior performance with faster transfer speeds and lower seek times.

after spending $50 for the game, then more money plus hours intalling a cdrw/dvd combo that's more than I bargained for. If it's dvd only, they should state so before people order. $50 is my budget for the pc for the quarter not just the month. not all of us are made of money.

Guess you have to wait another 3 months then

but installing a bunch of new hardware

One DVD-ROM drive is not a "bunch" of hardware. It's 20 bucks...jeez. Hell, that's almost as cheap as a simple floppy drive. I really don't see what you have to complain about. Cd's are going bye bye for game distribution and in my opinion they should have switched over to DVD for distribution a while ago. I'm sick to death of 6 disk installs...just plain ridiculous. To cater to whom? A small minority that can't afford a 20 dollar drive? Hell, I'm not rich by any means. In fact, I had to plan for this expense, but it really wouldn't be much trouble for me to work an extra 20 bucks into my budget. If your budget is really that freaking tight then maybe you shouldn't be spending the 50 bucks on a computer game.
