I'm trying to play a LAN game. I'm a very beginner when it comes to networks. I just bought a router today and got the two computers in my house networked together. When I choose New Game in the Lan lobby, I get two popups.

The network socket could not be created.

and

The network socket encountered an error and was closed. Disconnected.

What am I doing wrong? I'm on windows vista. Please understand that I do not know networking jargon, but if you walk me through what to do I will be able to get it. Thanks a million for any help!

I'm also having problems playing a LAN game. My boyfriend and I set up a wireless network between our two laptops, we're both running Vista. We've allowed Civ 4 through our firewall, and then even tried turning the firewalls off completely. However when one of us creates a game in the LAN option, its not showing on the others. Please help?

I'm also getting the above message.

Also when trying the direct IP route games cannot be joined.

Any ideas? I'm using Vista SP2. I tried fixing the IP's on both machines, and disabled virus checkers and firewalls.

Thanks.

Given the problem is associated with trying to start a game as host, the version putative joiners are using is irrelevant.
