I figured out the problem to an early problem that I had. It was memory problem causing my game to crash. So, I decided to use a program like 'Minimem' to optimize the program, it took the program from averaging around 1.5 gb of memory all the way down to only it using about 250mb! I was able to create a city with no problems of it causing a crash.

My question now is, will a program like this cause damage to my game or cause game-play troubles? Or does CiV have a lot of memory problems and it's helping me play the game?

Can't be any worse than the game patches themselves. The good thing about steam, is you can always delete the game and start over. Outside of viruses or worms, any software that helps, more than likely will not hurt. You are paying for the privilege of enjoying a game, not really the software itself. Only time will tell if you will have problems, but if you don't, this may solve other people's trouble also.

As this program only deals with the memory, I don't see how it could damage the game installation. But if you find yourself in some kind of strange state during the game because this minimem somehow damaged your program instance, don't look further. So, yes, it could cause gameplay troubles should it break something really important Civilization is actually using during gameplay. Otherwise, and if you don't notice anything but enhancement and disappearance of bug, let's say it's safe.

I doubt it would permanently harm the game, just affect it while it's running. I figure at worst it might affect the user files, which can be easily remade.
