Hi all. New poster to the forums, so I'm sorry if posting a wish list here violates the rules. Looked around, but couldn't find anything that said I shouldn't.

Just so you know where my suggestions are coming from, personally I play marathon games on huge archipeligo worlds. I like boats and exploration. I prefer that development (in terms of technology primarily) be relatively slow, but I still want to be able to do a lot in the mean time. I like to enjoy the flavor of each era, not just blow through them to the next super weapon. So please, when considering the practicality of any of my suggestions, remember the kinds of games that have shaped my experience.

The wish list:

Wonders

I like the system of national wonders, but I wish there were a lot more of them. They wouldn't have to have sweeping effects, they could just be upgrades over a basic building, rather like the Globe Theater. Every locality has its famous building or landmark, and I think a profusion of national wonders would help express that. It would also present interesting dilemmas. Sure, you could build your super obelisk early, but then after a while you are left with a useless national wonder where you might one day want an ironworks.

I also think it would be good if you could build religious wonders. Different than the special building you get through the Great Prophets, these would be available to any adherent of the religion. This way you could use events like the Crusades, which really represent a collective organization of effort and material equal to or greater than the construction of the wonders already included.

Of course, I would also like to see a lot more wonders, especially from cultures with less exposure in Civ. This game is written by westerns for westerns, so a certain amount of Amero-European-centricity is to be expected, and isn't "wrong" so much as it's unfortunate. Many great achievements parts of the world not only "deserve" exposure, but would add to the flavor of the game.

Buildings

I would like to see a suspension (or other type) bridge building that allows you to bridge a one-square gap between two islands. A tunnel building would also be acceptable.

In a similar vein, I think a canal type of construction would also be useful. Many times I build cities in locations that are not as bountiful in resources so that I can have a city-canal. Being able to build an actual canal would be a nice alternative.

Terrain

If rivers could be made navigatable, I think that would be an interesting development.

Diplomacy

I would like a much improved diplomacy system. As it stands, the game's diplomacy system is somewhat constrained.

The computer will almost never accept equal trades (equal techs or resources), regardless of how friendly you are to each other.

The game will only allow certain kinds of trades, and it is always like kind for like kinds. I should like to be able to offer resources for techs, or other combinations. Instead of a per turn stipend for a resource, I might want a lump sum.

Open Borders is too broad. I might want to allow access to my sea zones without allowing it on land, and vice versa.

It is impossible to tell the computer's commitment to a war. Often times you honor an alliance and the computer makes peace a turn or two later. There should be a "war commitment" report that tells you roughly the odds of the computer making peace before you make your decision.

It would be nice if there was a way to grant territory without giving away the city, like some form of zone reduction.

I also think a diplomatic trait makes a lot of sense. It might give a base +1 with all civs or something.

Well, that's my list. Thanks for the read.

Oh man do I hear ya on that one. I totaly agree with you man. Especially the canal part.

Well you have to remember, a unit like a destroyer is really a fleet of destroyers. Try sailing a fleet of destroyers down the Hudson River.

Never thought of this before, but GREAT idea.

Sorry, just giving some input, I don't have enough knowledge to accomplish any of this.

One way of doing the bridge to make a new unit, call it Bridge, and make it immoble like the ICBM and give it Domain Sea. Then allow workers to carry the Bridge. Then you build the Bridge in a city, your worker picks it up, worker moves to tile adjacent to water, and then Bridge unloads from worker into water. The Bridge can not load back into workers as it can't move. This is all down in xml and requires no coding knowledge. The are a few draw backs to this idea.
Bridge can only be built in cities that can build ships because Bridge's Domain is Sea
The AI will most likely use it in weird ways or not at all.
Units will finish there turn when they enter the Bridge just like boarding a ship and non-amphibius units will not be able to attack from the Bridge.
Lastly, would need a arty person to make a unit graphic for the Bridge.

Just an idea I had when I was makeing scouts carry canoes, not the cleanest fix for the problem, but it works. :)

Maybe some new units like a single steamboat or canoes.
