Yes. It is. It was ported by some Asian SNES company so it does have an interesting Asian slant.. including:
- A back story that has some sort of refrence to a goddness and such.
- Has Japan as a civ and drops the Zulus out.
Basically, it's civ. Through the interface maybe slightly more harder to navigate it's still got the same gamplay. If you see it I recomend you pick it up. I think if you search
www.mobygames.com for 'Civilization' and click on the SNES version you will find at least some screenies on it.
Oh, BTW, welcome to the world of civ1! I too tried the other civs but the original is by far the best. It's simple, balanced and the gamplay is perfectly tuned.
Most agree on the following advantages of civ1 over the sequels:
1. It's easier to view. 2D tiled base with simple icons works. It's clear where everything is and the menus are a sinch.
2. The AI (while not very smart) emulates intelligence well. You will find it doesn't give a half-effort when it invades you
3. The Civilipedia is non-PC, non-confusing and non-informative.. in other words the opposite of the others in the other games.
4. The gameplay. Science, warfare, economy and city-management all snaps together wonderfully.
5. The age of the game. It has 15 years of fans behind it. Everybody has either played civ1 or probably knows somebody who has. You will find countless reviews, FAQs, tips and tricks on the net for it.
6. It's slight tongue-in-cheek attitude. Civ1 wasn't made by some huge monster of a gaming company made up of 100s of programmers. It was made by Sid Meier and his small team and they had some fun along the way
7. The Palace feature. So much kewler then the others (I reckon).
8. It beats civ2 cause it's got a replay feature. As somebody mentioned a while ago in this forum: "Civ2 is like having a good meal but no dessert". The replay feature is really the icing on the cake.
That's all I can think of for now.. enjoy civ
