Hi all... been reading this forum for bit and just wanted to add my 2 cents....

I don't know if i'll be doing any new civs or mods, but maybe someone will use my idea.... :)

I've seen many ppl doing Spain.... but you seem to be forgetting it's neighbour, Portugal....

(and yes, I'm Portuguese....)

Although Portugal is a small country right now.... It was the most powerful nation in the world somewhere between the 15th and 16th/17th century....

Some historical facts:

- Around the end of the 15th century Portugal and Spain divided the world between themselves (the Tordesilhas (or Tordesillas) treaty)

- Portugal invented several key instruments for navigation, as well as the Caravelle.

- Magellan was portuguese, although his voyage was spanish funded....

- The first explorer/collonialist power of europe was portugal

- Although the offical date for the portuguese discovery of Brazil was 1500 (after the treaty was signed), it is believed that Brazil had been discovered by portugal before colombus reached america, because portugal asked for the division line in the treaty to move 500 leagues westward (just enough to get brazil on "our" side of the world.... :D )

- Portugal discovered the sea route to india (actually, we owned most of it before the british got it....), most of africa and a nice bit of the southern coast of asia... we first brought rifles to japan....

- During it's apex, portugal was the most scientifically advanced nation of europe, the richest, and has the biggest and most powerful navy....

- Alas... during that very apex there was a succession crisis that resulted in losing our independence to spain for some years... (1581 - 1640)
- The spanish Invencible Armada that attacked Britain in 1588 was for the most part composed of Portuguese vessels...

...this all goes to show that portugal was one of the great civs of our world, specially during the 15th-16th centuries...

So, in Civ terms portugal could have any of the following traits:

Expansionist - obvious, i think

Commercial - The colonies portugal established were major trading points that allowed several resources from other continents to reach europe...

Militaristic - We did have the worlds largest navy... :D

Scientific - we did have major scientific research on all things of ships and navigation, as well as some medical advancements...

Religious - Throughout all of portugal's history, religion and the clergy have played a significant role... (as well as sponsoring most of our expeditions, it is suspected.... for some reason the portuguese ships all has a cross on its sails, one very similar to the Knight's Templar cross...)

Well... it's a bit long for 2 cents.... :D but just had to use this chance to spread some culture over these unwashed masses.... LOL! :D

Forgot a few more things on Civ: Portugal....

Special Unit:
A ship from medieval period... replacing caravelle (although thats a very portuguese unit itself...) or other ship with something with more movement (expansionist), or more att/def (Militaristic)

Leader.... have to check my history.... some thoughts:

King Sebastien (Dom Sebastião) - Last king before the temporary loss of independence, ruled during the apex of portugal and disappeared mysteriously in battle...

Dom Afonso Henriques - First king of Portugal.

Dom Manuel I - 15th/16th century king, during his kingdom portugal reached India and began it's golden age...

Also... a correction to my historical notes on the last post.... the treaty dates from AFTER columbus first reached america, but brazil might have been discovered earlier and kept a secret.. anyway, two portuguese explorers were in north america from 1491 to 1494, having dicovered Labrador in 1492... the explorer's name was João Fernandes Labrador....

If anywone gets an interest on this and needs leader names or city names just gimme a "call"....

Olá MoonSprite,

like U I am mostly portuguese and I already started some tests with a customized MOD for Portugal.

I implemented the country and city names as well as leader names etc.

Unfortunately when I play CIV III I experience system hangups, which I was not able to locate. It always happens when enemy units move during the "end of turn"

I made some vessels available only to portuguese as well as some other units (in more modern earas) but not sticking so much to the historical backgroud.

As I have the above mentioned problems, I did not continue with things like adding new units etc. It is somewhat boring, if U are in the middle of a tough game and the system freezes - and there is no workaround for the time being...

But like U I do not understand, why game makers disregard the obvious role a civ like the portuguese played in the centuries of discovery, or the military tradition this country has.

As soon as I get able to correct the problems with CIV III I will surely continue to change the MOD-settings to a historical funded portuguese MOD (maybe there is some way to implement a picture of a former king or so for the diplomatic menue).

I'll keep U informed (although I think this will take some weeks). If the stability-problem is solved, then I'll have a lot more "power" to continue testing this settings.

Adeusinho e um grande abraço...
Baldio
