Civ questions

Does trade increase with high taxes? My strategy is just to go all-out science, so maybe this is why I never understood it.
No, but in Civ 1 gold is directly convertible into production from the start. Zeroing the science rate periodically is crucial to meeting short-term goals at the highest possible speed.

When I have a few trade routes, I still have 0 income with 100% science going. I guess I don't understand how that benefit works exactly. Can this be explained?

Establishing a route gives a one-time cash payout, displayed as "Revenue:" on screen. It doesn't say so, but you also get the equivalent number of bulbs added to research.

The ongoing effect of a route is a few extra trade arrows in the origin city every turn. At 100% science these trade arrows all become bulbs.

Actually had a question of my own, just was not sure how to post it. So here goes. Recently I was given(a very old) mac laptop. It has the original Civ game on it which I love! But yesterday as I was playing the Mac starting updating the some kind of index? Now I cancelled that and went back to the game only to find the minimap(where the year and money and all appear in the left hand corner) had disappeared! I have tried everything to get it back including restarting the machine. Can anyone help me out here? It is almost impossible to play with out it!

Bug or oversight, take your pick. Pretty much all of the "ocean" mechanics are wonky.

Speaking about ocean mechanics, I've had a diplomat board an ironclad he was bribing once. It also happened with a sub on another occasion. The ship was stacked with the diplomat on the water tile. Now I know I should've made a save of that situation, but for some reason I didn't. IIRC, when I tried to move the ship to see if I could use it as a transport, the diplomat disappeared. I don't remember if I could save him by dumping him on the beach though. I've also had units disappear from my transports when I try to unload them...

So, since this is a thread about questions, has anyone here had similar seafaring adventures?

Sounds like the Hunt for Red October...

^^yeah!, sub-diplomacy ;) And if you don't need any diplomat onboard - you just throw him away ;)
That was definitely inspired by Hunt for Red October

As far as I know trade does not increase with high taxes. Trade increases with caravans, and much trade allows you to draw enough taxes from your income. I also spend as much money as possible on science.
