Civ spawning by "cultural bundles."

I started a new game on Terra map. But since it's my first game, I've spent building roads on every tile that I have and now I have negative gold balance. I've lost a few units and a civ has cut through in between my cities.

I am thinking about starting over again. The question I was wondering is do similar civs spawn next to each other. In my current game I have all Asian civs bundled in one corner of the World, and all Muslim civs in the other, I play for Spain and I have Greece next to me. I like the fact that spawning position is realistic. If I start a new game, will the new civs spawn in bundles again, or was it just a coincidence?

Thanks.

Just a coincidence. I think CIIIv was the only game putting cultural groups near each other, CiV certainly doesn't have anything like that.

I guess you figured that out but yes, roads should only be built to connect cities and/or for military purposes, no need to connect resources like in previous games.

Coincidence.

There is nothing that defines how the civs start other than their start bias which is limited to the terrain/coastal areas.

Say Venice, Korea, etc. will spawn next to a coastal tile if possible while Austria will spawn on hills and Arabia and MOrocco in Desert if possible. Montezuma and Pedro will start near jungles.

Terra plops ALL of the civs on one landmass.

In Civ V, you do not need roads to connect resources and roads have a maintenance cost, so spamming roads on every tile is a bad plan. This is still a good summary of road economics (note that in BNW, road connections between cities are now called "city connections" rather than "trade routes", but the mechanics and economics are otherwise unchanged): http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=438745

Coffeehouse - personally I didn't try this mod but it seems to be stable (although I don't think it works with custom - added by modders - civilisations  ) and I am 99% sure it works with RED.

I miss the culturally linked start locations, I wish there was an option to turn it on without modding.

I used to do that in previous Civ version, but in Civ5 a road cost gold, so I'm much more careful now.

To save gold you can remove a road that you don't need any more
