Civ-Specific Unit Mod

Okay, I thought I was good at Civilization until I found this forum. Now I realize I have A LOT to learn.

Here is my suggestion (or request). I have seen many outstanding new units. I would like to see a MOD come out that would add a new Civ Specif unit to each civilization. So instead of each civ having one unique unit, they would have two.

It seems like many of the units are already developed, so essentially it would be developing a MOD that would load the units automatically. (once the remaining units are made).

Please understand, I am not barking out my request so someone else can do all of the work. I am just begining to look at the unit animation stuff myself. So I may try to create some myself

But I feel that if each civ gets a second specific unit, it would help maintain the balance of the game, while introducing many more exciting units.

Please let me know if a MOD like this is possible, and if anyone else would be interested in seeing a "2nd Civ-Specific Unit Mod."

Thank you.

This is a good, but not new, idea.

The LWC mod on the Completed Mods forums adds a "Minuteman" unit for the Americans.

In it, Longbowmen were correctly made English-specific; all other archers upgrade to crossbowmen - historically accurate.

I also took two barbarian units (I never use barbarians other than the basic one) and turned one into a Man-O-War, giving the English two Unique Units. I also gave the French a horse cannon unit that can move at the speed of cavalry.

Check out that mod; there are many new units there. Civ III's basic mod really is crappy with units, and techs, too. Compare.

One warning: I've had some crashing problems. Read the thread and decide for yourself. Maybe adding two UU's will cause problems. (?).

A second UU for the Romans could be a military engineer capable of building catapults, walls, and undermining enemy walls quickly.

The Greeks could have a short-lived Companion Cavalry (of Alexander), or his Macedonian Phalanx - an offensive machine that would have, in game terms, a '4' or even '5' rating.

Russians and Chinese could have a partisan/guerrilla unit (they both excelled at that in WW II).

The Germans could have Assault Troops - short-lived also, but really good offensive infantry.

The Japanese can have Kamikaze/Banzai units, perhaps.

Egyptians? For hundrfeds of years the Mameluke heavy cavalry dominated Egypt. They weren't ethnically Egyptian but were there nonetheless.

Yes, many of these second UU's would be short-lived being rendered obsolete in due course, or available for building only in a Golden Age.

And so on. I just hope the game can handle it.

What I'd really like is a true Great Leader who adds a combat bonus to any attack he's involved in.

I am already working on some Macedonian units for Exsanguination's Alexander the Great mod. Below I've attached a few (crude) examples. I also need to make a Thracian peltast (a javelin thrower). However, the Scythian/Persian/Saracen(Marmeluke?) horse archer has taken me over a month and is still not quite ready. Maybe next week.....?
