Our poll on which Civ to play looks like it may end in a 3-way tie.

Let's discuss a bit more how to make that selection. The choices previously considered were:
  • Select one
  • Choose a short list, then randomize
  • Completely random using the in-game randomizer

If you want to choose a civ or a short list, please state which civ(s) and why.
If you want the in-game randomizer, your random thoughts will be appreciated.

I have nothing to say on the actual topic, but French for "two" is "deux."

completely random.. then i think we should rename the civ!! make our own nation!!! HUZZAH!!!

You want to name our nation HUZZAH???

:rotfl:

I would like to have a random pick from a list. How we choose the list could be one of three methods: choose the ones we don't want to be, choose the ones we do want by roleplay opportunities, choose the ones we do want to play by civ traits.

Starting by ones which would be good for roleplay, I'd suggest:
Rome
Greece
England
France
Germany
Japan

I might add more to my roleplay list, but these are the ones I'd start that list with.

Wouldn't the shortlist be determined by some sort of multi-choice poll after the shortlist had been determined to be the best option?

Oh... my... goodness...

If we choose 'short list' or 'choose a civ' we have to go throught the rigmarole of having a poll on it, don't we?!

Well... I now realise that random civ is the only practical option...

Trying to get a majority in favour of any single civ strikes me as improbable- requiring multiple polls at least... and deciding things such as how many civs are to be in the shortlist, which random selection method to use, and the like strikes me as equally stressful, time-consuming and maddening...

With that in mind I must recommend that random is the way to go to see the game to start any time soon, and to prevent days or weeks of wrangling of details of polls that had too many options for their own good...

Cross-post from the poll, but I would like to add that we should choose a game that would appeal to most viewers and then select a civ based on this.

This is just one decision of many that will be faced as the democracy game is played. If you think polls and group decison making are rigmarole I really doubt you will enjoy the democracy game.

You do have a point about this decision being dragged out for too long. The fact that our beloved moderator (in his haste to get the game going) posred an ill conceived poll and has now followed that up with this ill conceived discussion means we are in for a long decison making process unless we talk some sense into him.

I've already suggested a poll for getting us on the road to making this decision. The suggested poll simply asks whether we want to use the ingame randomizer to pick our civ or choose our civ another way (to be determined later). If a majority vote fully random then we're done, if not then we tackle the quesiton of short list or pick one. The process does not have to take long.

I would post the poll but it has two controversial clauses: it would be private and vote changes would not be allowed. It now appears the former is acceptable but there was hesitation about accepting the latter.

i say random.. no more polls :(

Leave the position out of it. When it's not inside mod tags, it's a citizen post.

Someone has to drive it. If you or any other citizen picks up these items and drives them, then I'll be happy. If you don't, I'm not going to leave it undone.

To repeat, you can't force people to not change their votes. You can ask them not to, and you can ask me not to (which I might agree to but reserve the right to disagree), but you as an individual can't tell anyone not to change votes.

Back to the topic of this thread, suppose random doesn't win. Then we'll need to have had this conversation so the next poll will be ready to post. If we did it your way, it would be 4 days for a poll, then if random loses an unknown amount of time discussing it, then another 4 days for a poll, then maybe 3 or 4 more polls at 4 days each. Do you really think all these 90 or so people want to wait a whole month longer to get started?

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell no we dont ;)

@ donsig... I didn't mean that by rigmarole... I simply meant that a long-drawn out process inevitable ensues from having too many possible options... And long-drawn out processes are, well, long and drawn out...

I can see, for instnace, if we had a poll on which civ to play that we'd get no more than five percent in favour of any given civ

Roman society, politics, and war are ripe for roleplay, not to mention in-game the civ isn't half bad. If anybodys ever seen an episode of Rome, they'll know what I'm talking about.

I believe Dave and Donsiq have been arguing about everything for as long as they've been playing the DG together. Since both of them tend to do it respectively and adult-like, I find it very informative. May we learn by their disagreements! :mischief:

Yes, I'm still one of us. Just gotta be a bit careful when arguing, as the edit button is right next to the quote one, on everyone's posts and not just mine. :mischief:

Haven't wiped a post by mistake yet, but have had to hit the back button a couple of times.

Off topic, but I can't remember if we've always been at odds. When did you first join one of the democracy games, DaveShack?

"And the feud has been so long, not even the elders nor the trees can recall how it started, not even Daveshack or Donsig themselves."

I dont think it really much matters what civ we pick, even for roleplay purposes, since chances are we are going to create our own world. Just think about DG1, the role play (the little that there was), made us sound more like an English civ, or some middle earth civ you find in books. Boaring Wallow doesn't exactly sound Egyptian.

We might want to try and easy civ such as the Romans, just so we can come away with the win so not all confidence is lost (DG1 hurt us.)
