Having never played Rise of Nations, what are the good and bad comparisons and similarities?

Similarities? I didn't really notice much similarities, it's 'turnbased' between battles, but that's about it, not much strategy there IMO.
The real time strategy is very good though, well balanced and stuff.

I don't think comparisions between two different genres of games are valid in any sense

Rise of Nations is just another real time strategy game.Personaly once i 've played one i 've played them all.
This one only immitaded CIV in it's general concept idea.Good and bad comparisons and similarities i don't see.

RoN is not a bad game, as real time games go. They all have one major thing in common, the lack strategy development. However, this is not all bad as you have to react in a more real time situation. If you like to think through your moves, go with CIV. If you would rather have fast paced game, go with RoN. I do think RoN is one of the best RTS games I have played. (Note: I have not played Empire Earth which I hear is very good).

I found empire earth to be one of the worst turnbased games I'd ever played, and RON one of the best :)

EDIT; RoN and EE are real time, that's what you get when you don't reread your post :)

Empire Earth and RoN are not turnbased. They are real time. And what they both have in common is that they both suck. I think Civilization (I, II, and III) is/are the best empire building game ever created. All of that other crap is just crap.

civ is more playable than ron by the way ron is a real time civ turn-based game

I mixed them up, I know they are real time, that's what I meant to post :crazyeye: :crazyeye:
EE sucks, but RoN is good for some hours of fun play, after that it gets boring.

Rise of Nations is a RTS game with bad graphics and some borrowed elements from Civ that unfortunately do not add much to the flavor.

There are more interesting RTS games out there.

Strategy fans should try Medieval: Total War and its Add-On Viking Invasion perhaps!
Europa Universalis is also quite interesting, even if it was never really to my liking.

Indeed! Nothing comes even close to the Total War series when strategy comes into play. As a big MTW fan I have always considered the Civ3 RNG as a big letdown. Now you win... err now you loose...
As for diplomacy, some peeps seem irritated by Civ3 system. Well, compared to MTW's, it's ;) really perfect.

What about Korsun Pocket? It's a turn-based wargame, a little more complex than Civ, but it's pretty good. I haven't really gotten into it yet, but I'm sure I will.

Ah, KP, a wonderful system. It's a shame that it only has a few scenarios (and it is purely a wargame). IMHO, it is the pinacle of turn-based wargaming to date. The AI could be a little stronger, but that is about the only bad thing I can say about it.

Yeah, I have only gotten through some of the lengthy tutorials. I haven't actually tried the actual scenario yet.

Ive played warcraft, seen starcraft and heard.. if RoN is like that, then it be fun IMO ... the only drawback of those games is there is way more of the old survive/conquer than empire building... IMO too short... .. i like long games where it might not just be war... you have other issues to deal with.

pollution... unhappiness are perfect examples in civ III, but even i think civ's 560 some turns is too short... unlimited is my idea (it accually is but it doesnt keep anymore score...)
I want to raise a long lasting kingdom/empire..
you dont have to eliminate.. but can.
i wish for VERY GOOD AI interaction...
many things.. but be very complicated to program i bet... i mean im basicly asking for "real humanoid like AIs".

again.. RoN (real time) isnt for empire building.. its Warfare and the old take over the world scenario.
CivIII to me is more empire building but it still has the take over the world option ...
but time limit bothers me.. or when its just "you win" and BAM.. nothing else to do.. empires gone.. cant play any longer....
(IE. warcraft.... i mean you can linger for a long time as long an enemy farm house still exist)

ok... i just wrote a wondering road through this forest... time to find an end.

Thanks a lot homeyg - it looks a little bit like The Operational Art of War, but this is a hardcore grognard's game. I did not even like the more accessible and graphically attractive East Front, but this was a buggy game so well... I was more the Panzer General 1/2, Allied General and Steel Panthers semi-wargamer.

For all those who like RTS, try the new PANZERS...and tell me if it is really as good as people claim... :)
