Am wanting a cat, myself. Adore the creatures. Am moving in with my girlfriend at the end of the year and she's very tempted to get one, so hopefully a little persuasion and I have myself a furry little advisor.

My cat Hana enjoys sitting next to me while I play on my laptop and runs away scared whenever a leader pops up. She is the most scared of Asoka (go figure) and gets big eyes and every once in a while scratches at the screen (have a few dents on my screen) for the fish which move around to fast for her. Here is a picture of her in one of our fake plants (she is two) she lounges in while watching me play civilization from afar before jumping up and hitting the computer:

Every time someone declares war on me and that annoying trumpet sound comes, my parrot mimics it.
Ive sometimes gone from the screen after ending the turn and all of a sudden my parrot declares war and I run back in panic.

My cat does the same thing. Since everybody in the family is addicted to computers she's learned that the best way to get attention is to hop up on the desk and walk all over the keyboard.

People train dogs, but cats train people.

That's why I love cats. They have their own ideas about how things should be and they don't hestitate to do what it takes to get their way.

even though i don't have a pet i still found this to be an enjoyable thread to read. my GF and i always liked pets but never could get one. i plan on doing so in the future. but for now my GF will have to do , although she doesn't like watching me play games.

Get a ragdoll. That is what two of my three cats (Hana is one of them) are and they make great companions. They also are quite calm so you won't here too much crying at 3 A.M. and they will sit by you, play games with you, and are great with guests and dogs (I also have a abnormaly large black lab). They also have a tendency to sleep a lot so they won't plague you with annoyances.

Good point. Too bad my cat turns into liquid when he's on my lap. He also loves to rest his head or whole upper body on my mouse hand. Over the years he has learned that this is a bad idea when I'm playing FPS games and usually uses a chair next to me instead, since he can't tell what kind of game I'm playing. Of course, when he's out to annoy me, he'll jump on my lap and then tries to walk on my keyboard, or just stay on the floor and use my leg as a scratching post. Sometimes he just appears at the door to the room and stares at me accusingly.

My cat Max is very tolerant of my gaming. As long as his box doesn't need cleaned. Kitty is not very impressed when I say, "Just let me play a couple more turns, then I'll help you." Apparently, he has heard that one before.

I had a bird that reacted to the same sound as well. Hell my bird went nuts in general every time I played Civ4 or any other game; it was like a noise overload for it. It just died about a week ago, though; died in my hands. Lived for 14 years. Was originally my sister's bird, but she moved out about a year ago and couldn't take it with her (land lord). Kind of weird not hearing that bird anymore.... I was 6 years old when it came into the house. Every time I play a game now, feels like something's missing. Funny how even the smallest of things can profoundly affect you.

My fish sit behind me and I know they watch either me or the game. My cockateal likes to watch horse and auto races but not games. However if I zoom in on a jungle and turn up the sound she'll talk to the birds in the game.

Pretty funny. This is somewhat related, though not through gaming. I had a friend over who was smarting off about how dogs can't see tv images. I think it was the first time he was in the house with that dog at the time. Somehow or other I just knew my dog was going to react, although I don't think I had ever seen him do anything like that before. I suppose the conversation got started on that subject because I was playing a Siberian Husky video I had bought (the dog was a Husky too, which is why I bought the video).

At one point there was a black/white blue-eyed Husky (just like my dog) walking from the right side of the tv to the left, and being out of arms-reach of the dog I said, "Is that your daddy?" He got up off the floor as if on cue and put his nose on the screen with his ears perked up as though he were seeing a real dog. Shut my friend up real fast.

As a followup, I had two different Huskys. Gamewise the latest one I had would start climbing on my chair and try to shake hands, like I imagine a lot of dogs do when they're with someone who lives alone and happens to game on the computer. But that other one I spoke about earlier, he would go all the way around the chair and slip between the wall and the chair and put his nose just barely touching my mouse hand. It was hilarious, because it was so annoying. Then if I held out or didn't notice it, he would huff or lick his chops (which of course would "just happen" to hit my hand) and that would be the end of it because I would be attacking him after that. It was pretty funny sometimes that he and I would have tug-of-wars where I would try to keep him from even standing in that spot in the first place. Of course, over time, he would go off to the living room just long enough to where I would drop my guard.

Then, sometimes he would come in with a stealth mode that was pretty unbelievable at times. You would just happen to glance to the side and just about lose it because you had no idea he was there and he wasn't making a solitary sound.

LOL the downside to owning a cat.

My cat Jynx loves when I play civ 4. He rarely watches but he is a lapcat. It is odd though that he can decern the game from other times I am on the computer. I am usually stationary when I play Civ 4 so he can sleep on my lap as I sit. Occassionally he will take notice of the screen if I am doing alot of unit/stack moving or scrolling, mainly in the modern era with gunships and recon sweeps with planes. He will sniff the screen, usually pushing crazy buttons on the keyboard to do it. But when he smells nothing he lays back down again.
My other cat Jago is the mouser. He is full of ungodly energy. I have to keep an eye out for him because when he gets curious (usually if Jynx sniffs the screen and he sees it.) He will do a ninja leap onto the small desk usually knocking something over if I don't use my arm to block him. This will usually end up as a cat fight in my lap. **Jynx is annoyed by Jago** (Fat lazy cat vs. High energy Scitzophranic (sp?) cat.

We have six (yes: 6) cats and all of them will gladly slap the mousepointer or enemy troops (and mine I'm afraid). And stepping on the keyboard is a very good way of getting attention. One of them (that would be "Spot" in english) also likes to put his head and frontpaws on my mousehand. Gets hard sometimes to move the mouse as precisely or as far as I want. He can sleep like that for an hour or more. The feeling of a hand a sleep is well known, thank you . But I will only move him in the most tough situations like having to go to the bathroom.

Mostly though I look around after working (I work from home some of the time) or playing for half an hour and see 3 or more of the cats lie sleeping all around me and mostly with one between me and the keyboard. What a great feeling! Not a billion goldbars could pay for that! I know I'm nuts, but I don't care and it doesn't hurt , so don't feel sorry for me .
