Civ2 start loop?

I've noticed that several copies of Civ2 will send you back to the start menu when you click on the "quit" option. (Once you're back at the main menu you can quit by pressing the cancel button.) My copy does not have this and I was wondering what cheat I had to use/game file to modify to get such an option.

I think it's a feature of Multiplayer Gold Edition. As far as I know, there is no way to replicate it beyond "upgrading" to MGE.

Is there a way to do that and still keep the old Civilopedia settings? When I've done that it always comes up as just text.

That I don't know, but my gut tells me the answer is no. I think the MGE civlopedia was designed so that it would be useful for scenarios, whereas the original was a fixed document (or documents). There is no reason why you can't have a copy of both versions on your computer at the same time (plenty of players do this), so you can use whatever version suits you at the time. Particularly since the MGE AI is very hostile compared to that of Classic.
