Civ3 after patch won't run

Hi,
I've installed Civ3 with no patches and it runs fine, but once I've installed the latest patch 1.29f it comes up with a dialog box saying "no civilization III installation detected".

Also if I install Civ3 and don't patch it then try and install Conquests that says I have to install Civ3 before the expansion?!?!?! What the smegg is going on?

I'm running Win2k with sp4 with 1gig of memory on an Asus A8N-SLi with an Athlon 64 processor. Are there any known issues I'm missing here?

Please help I NEED my Civ3 fix

Tried installing Codename Panzers and this time it said "Need to log off and log on with administrator rights". But I AM logged on as the admin!! Guess my 2000 install is up the spout so time for a reinstall Would have been nice if the Civ installers would have said the same thing instead of continuing to install but not setting whatever it needed to work.
