Civ3 Expansion Pack Announced!

Converting the game to multiplayer, may solve the current idiocy with the Chinese water torture that is stupid AI's with 1/2 price units at the upper difficulty levels.

Not sure it will fix any of the tedium problems in the regular game.

I would hesitate to buy the expansion pack at this point based on the problems with CIV3.

After the initial blush of graphics and the tech tree wears off and after I have played the civ advantages, the higher levels become a crapshoot as to if I die or live. It rarely seems to have anything to do with skill and just seems to be effected by the RNG that determines if I get attacked by 16 barb horseman or if I get lucky and get 32 of the scum all in the same turn. Since I never get to see the tech tree in the higher levels except as hand me downs, I rarely feel in control of the games even when I am winning.

Wonder if this will be a designed in feature of the XP and MP?

Turnless mode? Could this be the real time Civilization that I've always wanted?

come on why does every one want ancient civs what we need is some newer ones like australia and canada if america can make it why cant these 2 civs make it i have no idea what the UU could be for canada but for my country australia either the light horseman or the anzac besides if u play on a world map with the exact locations u will get to build one city maybe and then you are off to war

...

I'm amazed to see how many people jump in joy at the idea to pay an expansion to get things that should have been in the game from the start.

I guess that I can't hold any grudge to people of the marketting department, as long as there will be such a big amount of people that get ripped off with a smile and a "thanks !".

If there are new Civs, there better be at least two near-east ones, liek the Saracenes and some Arabian-Penisular ones or so!

If anything in Civ3 is 'odd', it`s including both Persia and Babylon, but keeping all Muslin Nations out!

What a bizarre reaction. I've always assumed that Egypt, Babylon and Persia included their descendant civs. They don't have separate civs for England in Christianity and England's pagan years. That's what developing Monotheism is for.

As for the XP set, the money is in my bank account, waiting. I'm rooting for the Mayans, and tonight, I will tell my g-friend that she is almost certain to be able to play a game with Trondhiem in it after all. And I have this special bottle of bourbon, I've already called ahead to order the pizza, and oh yeah, I've renamed my dog "Sid Meier," even though she's a girl.

"Tough luck, Sid."

"woof, woof?"

Good work, Firaxis, and I say that sight unseen.

well now, that solves the mystery of the "play the world.txt" file in the Text folder...

Since I am not near my computer with Civ 3 on it, please elaborate if you would. Thank you

But I don't understand the excitement...

I have serious doubts that they are going to come through with a successful expansion (it took them 6 months to get out a marginally effective patch).

I won't be holding my breath for this expansion. Nor will I shell out the bucks for the expansion when I can spend my gaming dollars elsewhere...

Best of luck

Great news!!! Can't wait to know more!!!:D :D :D

Anyway here are my guesses for the new Civs:

Mongols
Vikings
Mayas or Incas (I don't think they will put both of them)
Spanish or Portuguese (as said previously)
Carthagineans
Hebrews

Swooper, I don't think Australia, and certainly not Canada, meet the criteria of what would make an appropriate "civilization." Both are simply modern day nations that most closely represent a cross between America's culture (whether those folks care to admit it or not) and the government and social structure of Britain.

Though America, Canada and Australia are roughly the same "age" (Canada as we know it in 1859, Australia in the 1820s - or 1788, if you count colonization), neither Canada nor Austrailia has made the kind of significant stamp on history as a whole that America has. Both are wonderful countries with interesting histories and great achievments, neither has impacted the world, for good or ill, the way America has. Because of that, America warrants "civilization" status in Civ III (and in general) while the other two do not, in my opinion. One would be hard pressed to argue that 400 years from now America will not be a significant part of the history books regarding the post-1800 era; one would also be hard pressed to argue that Canada and Australia would.

Of modern civilizations, the most significant are covered, as with the exception of the U.S., the modern "big civilizations" of today have long and rich histories that are represented in the game already. For that reason, I imagine there will be a tilt towards ancient peoples in the expansion.

People have mentioned the Mayans and Incans, and while they are somewhat close to the Aztecs, they are significantly different enough to create a new civ from either.

The Norse and/or Celts are both very good guesses, I'll wager, as are the Mongols. I'd bet the Mongols are a sure thing, in fact.

I could certainly see the Polynesian people being added, though since they are not a historically centralized civilization, I don't know how that would be handled. (Then again, the Iroquois seem to be there for Native Americans in general, though don't be surprised if another NA tribe is added)

Spain is a good bet, as are the Sumarian people. Another Middle Eastern culture for sure, I'd wager.

And what about modern Latin culture? Brazil and/or Mexico would make a suitable in-game civilization, and like America, these are a people who have very recently put their very unique stamp on the world by merging together several older cultures (Spanish, native Sout American and Carribean among them).

Anyway, I am getting long winded, and I want to go play some Dungeon Siege. Be well.

Not a dime, until it's bug free. Fool me once, shame on you,
fool me twice, shame on me.

Then you don't have to play MP, if you don't want too...

Firaxis originally announced that multiplayer would be in the basic version of Civ3. They made a lot of marketing ground amongst fans with this announcement. It was eventually dropped "because of time constraints".

If they are now announcing we will have to pay more for multiplayer, I can understand people's frustration and cynicism -- it does seem at odds with Firaxis's original announcements and the story they have been telling us all along.

So the rolleyes probably aren't warranted. The poor fellow you're rolling your eyes at was probably just expressing his understandable irritation at the 'carrot' of multiplayer being whisked a few more dollars away from him.

Now there's someone who's busting for a fight! You and me, one on one. When that expansion pack comes out, we'll see which of us is getting culturally assimilated. My Aussie culture's gonna knock seven shades of poo out of your Seppos. And when the your cities culture-flip to my empire, I'll give 'em to the Russians just to irritate you...

Well, in the Civ3/Text folder, theres a weird .txt file that has a menu for a "Play the World" game. It turned out to be the multiplayer that we're gonna pay $20US for. Probably $60 Canadian.

Anways, if Firaxis doesn't bundle a Scenario Editor, I'll go crazy and email them until they make one.

Dear Firaxis,

Listen to my humble plea. Please put a scenario editor in Civ3. Its 6 months overdue... etc.

Easy there, big fella! I'm not tangling with some tough from Brisbane anytime soon ... I know all about you guys.

Oh. You meant in the game. Well bring it on! I can't wait to see how they implement MP and would like to try my hand at it. If it means beating down some Aboriginese people, well, I hate to do it to such nice folks, but all's fair in war and war.

Actually, if the new civs are closely tied into the scenarios, we could be surprised at what they are. If, for instance, there is a World War II scenario, would that mean we'd see a modern day Italy civ, and maybe some Canadians and Australians? Maybe. or if there was a fantasy-these scenario, maybe we'd see some ... Canadians and Australians!

Or not.

Well, having to pay more money to get MP is certainly disappointing, especially when you see other company is releasing MP addon for free (3DO released Heroes4 w/o MP in early April but they promised the MP patch will be provided for free soon).

I hope Firaxis can include a new set of terrain graphics for Civ3 in the expansion pack. Sure Snoopy's terrain modpack is nice, but it would be great if Firaxis can release an official better looking terrain set. A new terrain set shouldn't be too hard to make also.

The more goodies they include in the expansion, the more people will buy it. :)

I am glade the expansion pack is coming out, but I am left wondering why every one has failed to mention the other half of the Habsburg Family as a viabal choise to be one of the 8 Civilizations. Thats right I am talking about Austria, and yes I do know that they will more than likely not make it but if you remember Maria Theresa was a Monarch on Civilization II (that pissed me off bacause they put her rival as the male counter part). But I would like to remind you people that Austria was a major part of world affairs for hundreds of years, and that they where not only responsible for the 1st World War but also for the 1st true World War (The Austrian Succesion). So I would not count them out quite yet.
One other note to the guy who called the Austrians Romanian on another post, they where German!!! And when using a national noun for Austria-Hungary it should be Austrian not Hungarian lets not forget who was the master and who was the Vassal (sorry if this offends someone but Maria and Franz both considered them self's Austrians not Hungarians. They where rulers of Hungary not rulers from Hungary)

YES.. HOTSEAT mode! that would be very much enjoyable in a non-network enviroment with some friends or close companions. I hope they get that idea! probably would be pretty easy to implement too i bet.

a NO-TURN mode?? that will be strange... how the heck to you play real-time with civilization? i guess only the real small maps, or the simple action scenarios.

well, even if no new units wont be a problem. we can ALWAYS design it OURSELVES... cool thing is, we can already do that with the current editor.

I definitely look forward to this! whoO!
